AGL Power Rankings, Week 16: Al Jazira Closes In On Trophy After Two-Win Week

1 Had less possession, less number of shots on goal, earned an own goal, a man sent off … but came out with three more points. Al Jazira have a formula that works, and so far they’ve stuck to it admirably. Henk Ten Cate can breathe now. LAST WEEK: 1 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 4 Latest result: Won at Al Ain 3-1 and Sharjah 1-0 Next AGL match: Home against Ittihad Kalba (3/2) 2 Omar Abdulrahman had a MoM of a performance against a tough opponent – showed a strong work ethic on scoring the first goal and kudos to his vision on the ball to Al-Shamrani which led to the decider in the dying minutes. Beautiful. LAST WEEK: 3 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 5 Latest result: Lost against Al Ahli 2-3 Next AGL match: Home against Al Nasr (3/2) 3 The win takes them to a good spot right behind Al Jazira atleast for a few hours. All those points dropped against lower tier sides is going to come back and haunt them. LAST WEEK: 4 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Won at Al Nasr 2-1 Next AGL match: Home against Al Wahda (2/2) 4 For a game of this calibre to be entertaining, someone had to lose. Unfortunately, it was Al Ahli that had to be on the losing front. LAST WEEK: 2 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 6 Latest result: Won against Al Ain 2-1 Next AGL match: Away at Dibba Al Fujairah (3/2) 5 Life just isn’t the same without Tagliabue and Dzsudzsák in the line-up. Will need to figure that out soon because they will not be around in the foreseeable future. LAST WEEK: 5 HIGH: 3 | LOW: 9 Latest result: Draw against Al Dhafra 0-0 Next AGL match: Away at Al Wasl (2/2) 6 We continue to say this but interestingly Al Dhafra have held up their own against some very dangerous opponents in the past few games. Bravo. Life gets easier for them in the next few rounds which could potentially push them into a ACL qualifying spot. Extreme thinking? LAST WEEK: 6 HIGH: 5 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Draw against Al Wahda 0-0 Next AGL match: Home against Sharjah (2/2) 7 Their season will be defined by what they do in the next 5 games. It’s clear they did good work building a young core through-out but will be relying on their foreign contingency to close the season. LAST WEEK: 7 HIGH: 7 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Draw against Hatta 1-1 Next AGL match: Away at Al Jazira (3/2) 8 Bruno Moraes continues to bless Dibba with his goal scoring abilities – just knows when and where to show up. A perfect headline for Dibba – The Resurgence To Safety? LAST WEEK: 9 HIGH: 6 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Won at Emirates 2-0 Next AGL match: Home against Al Ahli (3/2) 9 The trouble keeps mounting for Al Nasr. Not just off the pitch but on it as well. It does not get easier given their opponents in the next few league games. LAST WEEK: 8 HIGH: 2 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Lost against Al Wasl 1-2 Next AGL match: Away at Al Ain (3/2) 10 See Ittihad Kalba. Similar thoughts. Last minute lack of concentration cost them the two points. LAST WEEK: 11 HIGH: 7 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Draw at Ittihad Kalba 0-0 Next AGL match: Home against Baniyas (4/2) 11 Ladies and Gentlemen, guess who’s back at the end of the season? Yes LUVANNOR. His three helped raise Al Shabab through the shambles of a run they were going through. Hopefully, it will help them erase the recent hammering(s) from their memories. LAST WEEK: 13 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Won at Baniyas 4-2 Next AGL match: Home against Emirates (4/2) 12 Their only goal for the season will be to keep Jose around and make sure he can build from scratch for the 17/18 season. LAST WEEK: 10 HIGH: 6 | LOW: 12 Latest result: Lost at Al Jazira 0-1 Next AGL match: Away at Al Dhafra (2/2) 13 Beat champions Al Ain in one of the thrillers of the season. Then flopped against a team that is way off form. Does not make sense. LAST WEEK: 12 HIGH: 12 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost against Dibba Al Fujairah 0-2 Next AGL match: Away at Al Shabab (4/2) 14 Maybe we overreacted to last week’s win against Al Shabab? The first-win-of-the-season hangover appears to be gone. LAST WEEK: 14 HIGH: 9 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost against Al Shabab 2-4 Next AGL match: Away at Hatta (4/2)
