AGL Power Rankings, Week 14: Al Jazira Back At No. 1, Capitalizing On Al Ain’s Misfortunate Scheduling

1 Are the Jazrawi’s back, for real? It’s hard to deny the sheer, overwhelming dominance they showed against Al Wasl in all aspects except ball possession — the best performance by any team we’ve seen this season. And with Ali Mabkhout taking some rest from goal scoring duties, good to see others picking up. We think they’re back. LAST WEEK: 3 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 4 Latest result: Won at Al Wasl 3-2 Next AGL match: Home against Al Wahda (19/1) 2 Al Ain have been a disorganized mess at the back, and you can only scramble so well for so long. After Emirates, they will be going up against three who feed on these type of defences … yikes. LAST WEEK: 1 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 5 Latest result: Draw at Baniyas 1-1 Next AGL match: Away at Emirates (19/1) 3 What a signing Makhete Diop has been for Al Ahli? One of the best of not only the transfer window but the season and surely, the Ahlawis’ are enjoying this moment to the fullest. A resurgence from the low for the club. LAST WEEK: 4 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 6 Latest result: Won at Emirates 3-0 Next AGL match: Home against Al Nasr (20/1) 4 One word — LUCK. If it wasn’t for it they wouldn’t have earned the freekick, the unfortunate deflection wouldn’t take place and the defender would have most likely cleared the ball with ease. Will need more than that against league leaders next week. LAST WEEK: 5 HIGH: 3 | LOW: 9 Latest result: Won against Hatta 3-2 Next AGL match: Away at Al Jazira (19/1) 5 It looked like Al Wasl had turned a corner after the loss to Al Ain, but the loss against Al Jazira — especially the defensive miscommunication — let some of the air out of the balloon. Still hope though. LAST WEEK: 2 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Lost against Al Jazira 2-3 Next AGL match: Away at Al Dhafra (20/1) 6 Good news — Wanderley was back in action after the 6 month suspension. Bad News — did not really figure out what was going on in the middle of the pitch until the last few minutes. But a D is always better than an L. LAST WEEK: 6 HIGH: 2 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Draw against Al Dhafra 2-2 Next AGL match: Away at Al Nasr (20/1) 7 Al Dhafra’s inability to deal with the last 15 minutes of the game has killed them all season. The pieces exists to make one of their patented runs, but they have got to start getting the little things right. LAST WEEK: 7 HIGH: 5 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Draw at Al Nasr 2-2 Next AGL match: Home against Al Wasl (20/1) 8 Third win of the season. Have to win games these kind of games if they intend to stay in the top division, and WIN they did. Moved up because of the disappointing goal-less draw between Al Shabab and Sharjah. LAST WEEK: 10 HIGH: 8 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Won against Dibba Al Fujairah 3-2 Next AGL match: Away at Al Shabab (21/1) 9 Struggling to win a game since that drab draw against Hatta in November and the following onslaught in the hands of Al Jazira. The one time title contender is slowly drifting away. LAST WEEK: 8 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 8 Latest result: Draw at Sharjah 0-0 Next AGL match: Home against Ittihad Kalba (21/1) 10 Safe to say the Power Rankings is taking its time to come around on this Sharjah team, who were able to grit and grind their way to another excellent home draw. Safe to say if they take full away points against Hatta the next weekend and with a breath of fresh air in the form of José Peseiro, we’ll finally start to quicken our pace and board the Sharjah bandwagon. LAST WEEK: 9 HIGH: 6 | LOW: 12 Latest result: Draw against Al Shabab 0-0 Next AGL match: Away at Hatta (20/1) 11 They were just unlucky. That late cameo by Rafael Silva made us want to see a little bit more of him — seems to have good feet and vision, and can perhaps be part of the answer for Hatta’s attack. LAST WEEK: 11 HIGH: 7 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost at Al Wahda 2-3 Next AGL match: Home against Sharjah (20/1) 12 The only team yet to secure a WIN this season. We wonder if a difference of one season can result in this misfortune for Dibba? LAST WEEK: 12 HIGH: 6 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Lost at Ittihad Kalba 2-3 Next AGL match: Home against Baniyas (21/1) 13 Well, the story continues for Baniyas but on the + side, a draw against Al Ain is never a bad result. Let’s just leave it at that. LAST WEEK: 14 HIGH: 9 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Draw against Al Ain 1-1 Next AGL match: Away at Dibba Al Fujairah (21/1) 14 Got Diop-ed. LAST WEEK: 13 HIGH: 12 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost at Al Ahli 0-3 Next AGL match: Home against Al Ain (19/1)
