AGL Power Rankings, Week 1: Guess Who Is Still At The Top?

1 Started this campaign just like they ended last season – on a winning note. Everything is just working out for them – shaped defence, structured on the offensive, Gyan dancing, Khalil scoring and so on. Extended their domestic league streak without a loss to 17 with this win over Emirates. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: – | LOW: – Latest result: Win against Emirates 4-0 Next AGL match: Away at Al Nasr (22/09) 2 Not sure if there was anything exciting apart from the fact that all three foreigners scored via a PK each. If Wanderley would be involved, the entire quartet could have been on the scoresheet via PK’s. That would have been a first!! LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 2 | LOW: – Latest result: Won at Al Dhafra 4-1Next AGL match: Home against Al Ahli (22/09) 3 Cautious optimism is what Al Jazira fans are preaching, especially when fans haven’t forgotten the disappointing mid-table finish last season. Yet there’s no denying that watching Ali Mabkhout continue his goal-scoring form felt rather satisfying. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 3 | LOW: – Latest result: Won against Al Wasl 3-1Next AGL match: Away at Al Wahda (23/09) 4 Demoted them purely on the basis that there were better performances elsewhere in the league this week. Stunner from the man on form for Al Ain – Brazilian Caio but how much time did he have on that shot? #العين يتقدم على #بني_ياس بهدف عن طريق اللاعب كايو#دوري_الخليج_العربي pic.twitter.com/9QrMYciTMm — قناة دبي الرياضية (@dubaisportstv) September 18, 2016 LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 4 | LOW: – Latest result: Won against Baniyas 1-0 Next AGL match: Away at Emirates (22/09) 5 Demoted purely because on the away goal. Way to fight their way through. Showed strong intentions for the current season. They will be eagerly waiting to see which one of their Dubai based brethren will fall this week, if any. LAST WEEK: 5HIGH: 3 | LOW: 8 Latest result: Won against Sharjah 2-1Next AGL match: Away at Ittihad Kalba (23/09) 6 1st goal of the 16/17 season, 1st goal for Kalba since being promoted and 1st three points of the season. Welcome Ittihad Kalba. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 6 | LOW: – Latest result: Won at Dibba Al Fujairah 1-0Next AGL match: Home against Al Shabab (23/09) 7 Not the start Hungarian Dzsudzsak was expecting in the league opener especially against Hatta Club. Tagliabúe was unlike his usual self – the one who scores at will. Redemption will be needed for Aguirre and co. and needed soon. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 7 | LOW: 9 Latest result: Draw at Hatta 0-0Next AGL match: Home against Al Jazira (23/09) 8 Though it might show up as a ‘D’ in the league table, in our eyes, this is a win. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 8 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Draw at Al Wahda 0-0Next AGL match: Away at Sharjah (23/09) 9 Delightfully inconsistent. A typical Baniyas performance. The club still has to figure out a way to keep fighting for the entire 90 mins. Looked tired and fatigued. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 9 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Lost at Al Ain 0-1Next AGL match: Home against Dibba Al Fujairah (24/09) 10 Sigh! Still having trouble getting past top tier teams. Was shocking to observe players like Fabio Lima and Barbosa get limited shots at goal. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 10 | LOW: – Latest result: Lost at Al Jazira 1-3Next AGL match: Home against Al Dhafra (24/09) 11 Praised them a little too much last season. Handed Al Nasr 3 penalties and earned one back. Honestly, was expecting Al Dhafra to shock the visitors. So much for that. Not Al Dhafra like at all but not the end of the road. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 11 | LOW: – Latest result: Lost against Al Nasr 2-4Next AGL match: Away at Al Wasl (24/09) 12 Going into the dressing room, Donis could not have asked for a better start to his AGL tenure. Coming out of the dressing room, it was all over. Sharjah as usual, continues its trend as the club broke down in the second half. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 12 | LOW: – Latest result: Lost at Al Shabab 1-2Next AGL match: Home against Hatta (23/09) 13 Expected a strong run from them this season starting off against league minnows (though they were considered the same last season but have gone past that title due to incredible run). On the contrary, they were humbled. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 13 | LOW: – Latest result: Lost against Ittihad Kalba 0-1Next AGL match: Away at Baniyas (24/09) 14 They were lucky to survive in top flight last season. In order for the same this season, looks like they would need more than luck on their side. LAST WEEK: –HIGH: 14 | LOW: – Latest result: Lost at Al Ahli 0-4Next AGL match: Home against Al Ain (22/09) PS: This weeks rankings were based on where the 12 teams ended at last season. The two promoted teams (Hatta and Kalba) were added to the bottom of the list prior to the games.
