The 10: What we Learned in Week 2

Week 2 in the shield is in the books and although we still don't know much about how the season will turn out we have a even better idea. Its not how you start its how you finish but the start for some teams should be concerning. Here are the 10 things Week 2 taught us in the NFL:

Giant Issues

I picked the Giants to get to the playoffs and two weeks in I'm already regretting it. Now I'm not jumping ship on the pick, but I'm not as optimistic as those who keep bringing up the past history of New York's bad starts. The Giants have issues and its much more than the health of star WR Odell Beckham Jr. They simply might have the worst offensive line in the league (and that's saying something, see below). They have to find a way to get Eli time in the pocket because he has weapons but that doesn't mean anything if you don't have the ability to get the ball to them.
The good news is their division that they aren't the only team with issues in it, the bad news is their schedule doesn't get any easier from here on.

I said the Giants may have the worst offensive line in the NFL, well that's because the Seattle Seahawks line are giving them a run for their money. Through 2 weeks the line has looked atrocious against teams with ok and young defenses. Unlike the Giants the Seahawks don't have the offensive weapons to get the ball too. Their Offense consist of QB Russell Wilson going out and trying to make a play. Its always telling when the members of your defense come out and basically say our side of the ball has to win games. That's essentially what CB Richard Sherman was saying after the teams Week 2 win against San Francisco.

Chief of the NFL

The best looking team through the first two weeks so far has been the Kansas City Chiefs. I didn't want to hype them up too big after their opening night win against New England but after last weeks win against Philly, the Chiefs have proven they are the real deal. They arguably have the best roster on both sides of the ball in the league but know they have their QB playing better than he has in his career. The drafting of Pat Mahomes may have been the best thing Kansas City did because he is orchestrating this talented offense almost like Matt Ryan did for Atlanta a year ago. So far the best team in football plays in the AFC West (see below)

I said it last week and I think they wanted it reiterated this week but the AFC West is the best division in the NFL. As I said the Kansas City Chiefs may have the best team in the league, but their division foes may have the best units. The Broncos won the Super Bowl 2 years ago thanks to a defense that carried its offense, now it seems that offense is clicking and that's scary for the AFC. They dismantled the Dallas Cowboys handing the team their worst loss in the Prescot/Elliot era. The Raiders haven't played world beaters yet but have looked very impressive especially with QB Derek Carr and that offense. The Chargers are the only downside of the AFC West, but their 0-2 start hasn't come from lack of trying, just like last year they cant seem to close out 1 score games.
The real fun of this division is they have yet to play one another yet (except the Broncos and Chargers).

Unsure of the Champs

Two weeks in and I still don't know what to make of the defending Super Bowl champs and that's to no fault of their own. The Chiefs may as well have the best roster in the league and had months to prepare for opening night and the Saints defense might be all time Historically Bad. I don't know how to judge the Patriots right now especially with the team losing another weapon in TE Rob Gronkowski in the game. I have no doubt that New England will make the playoffs and win the AFC East (although the Dolphins are starting to make me believe) but I don't know how to stack them up against the rest of the AFC just yet.

Through the first two weeks the NFC has 3 unbeaten teams (ATL, CAR and DET). Two of those squads, Atlanta and Detroit face off in Mo-town in Week 3. They are also two of the teams I'm holding judgement for. The Falcons struggled to pull out a win against a rebuilding Chicago team in W1 and in W2 took advantage of a Packers team who was riddled with injuries while opening a brand new stadium in primetime. The Lions have beaten an old Arizona team who lost its best player during the game in W1 and took advantage of a dysfunctional team in the Giants on MNF in W2. After their game on Sunday it will tell me about both and who the class of the conference is to start the season.

Adversity for Dallas

The Cowboys were manhandled and pushed around by Denver on Sunday. That actually is part of the story. For the first time since entering the league Dak and Zeke are facing true adversity. Things were all rosey in year one but now how will they respond after being punched in the mouth. Dak's postgame presser was telling and I think he will bounce back from that performance. His workhorse back I'm still unsure of. The one play that's been a talking point all week for most sports shows is where it seems after an pass thrown by Prescot is intercepted by the Broncos, it appears Elliot quits trying on the play after the ball is turned over. Unlike Dak, Zeke hasn't experienced much losing in his football career, especially one as bad as this. It will be interesting to see how the young duo and the rest of the Cowboys can recover from a loss like this, especially on the defensive side where an already weak unit, got worse after Sunday.

Same old New Orleans. Their terrible defense isn't really news if we are being honest, they have been historically bad on that side of the ball for the last few years. What is surprising is how they seem to top how historically bad they can be. When through 2 weeks in the season you've already given up 1,000 + yards on offense, you're basically saying "yeah we still suck on defense and didn't really do much to change it". I write that to say I think this is they year that ownership finally takes a look in the mirror and admit that its time to blow it up and start over.

Baffling Bengals

Ok its one thing to not score a touchdown in the first 2 weeks of the season, its another thing to go TD less in the those games at home. That's what the Bengals have done to begin the season. I'm not a guy whos for pressing the panic button so early in the year, but for the Bengals this is nothing new, this is wash, rinse, repeat for them. I talked about the Saints needing to blow it up, well Cincinnati is their AFC equivalent and they need to do the same thing. First its time for a change at head coach. Marvin Lewis is the active 2nd longest tenured coach in the NFL and it hasn't wielded any results. He is the franchises winningest coach but hasn't one a postseason game in his 14 year stint. After they do that the team needs to evaluate the QB position. I'm not saying Andy Dalton is a bad signal caller, but with the talent they have on the offense there should be no way this team should be without a TD in its first two games. I say get ahead of the problem now and move forward.

I didn't go gaga over the LA Rams dominate W1 win over the Colts, its Indy and with or without Luck their defense was going to bad regardless. Now the Washington Redskins aren't world beaters on defense either but are a significant step up. Although LA lost the game, through the 1st two games I realize that Goff has a chance with Sean McVay as his head coach. After last season I admitted that I thought Jared Goff was a bust, and that really had nothing to do with him it was more the organization and the former coach in Jeff Fisher. Well the Rams realized this as well and canned Fisher and brought in the young coach to help get this offense on track. Geoff still has things to learn of course but through the 1st two games I think the Goff/McVay marriage will eventually yield positive results down the road. That's a positive thing for Los Angeles looking at the state of their division.
