Chomp Chomp! Coach Jim McElwain and the Florida Gators have landed one of the top safeties in the 2018 class. Calvary Christian safety Amari Burney verbally committed to the University of Florida. Amari Burney committed the Florida Gators over the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Burney is the 7th Gator commit in the 2018 class. He joins C.J. Smith as the two safeties in the Florida class. This was a major target for the Gators as Coach Jim McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, his area recruiter, went after Amari Burney hard and early in the recruiting process.

Amari Burney is a four-star recruit out of Calvary Christian High School in Clearwater, Florida. He is a top 10 safety in the country. On 247 Sports, Amari Burney is the 10th ranked safety in the country and the 104th best 2018 recruit in the country. On ESPN, Burney is the 6th ranked safety in the country and the 40thbest recruit in the 2018 class. Amari was invited to attend the Nike Opening Finals in the Nike Headquarters in Oregon.

Amari Burney has received a lot of national attention and scholarships during his high school career. He currently has 21 offers from top tier schools like Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State and Virginia Tech. Burney picked Florida over all the others schools because of the relation he has with Coach Mac and the rest of Florida’s coaching staff. “The coaches feel like family and that’s what they represent. I know they’re going to take care of me like I’m their own son, so that’s a relief for me and my parents,” Burney told SEC Country’s Zach Abolverdi.

Amari Burney is as good as it gets when it comes to safeties. Burney stands at 6’2 and weighs 210 pounds. He can possibly play both safety and wide receiver as Florida’s offensive coordinator, Doug Nussmeier, said that they’ll try him out on offense and defense. Besides his frame, Burney’s speed is impressive as well. Amari Burney runs a 4.48 40 time with his size. He has great playmaking ability and is dangerous with the ball in his hands. Even though Coach Nussmeier would like to try him out at receiver and safety, Amari Burney will mostly play safety. DBU gets another elite secondary recruit to join their fraternity. Welcome to Gator Nation Amari!
