The English giants have been monitoring young right-backs in the past few months.
According to the latest reports in England, Manchester United are interested in Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest.
The United States international only joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2020 for 21 million euros and his contract runs to June 2024.
Dest finished the 2021/22 season with a tally of three assists from 31 matches across all competitions.
The 21-year-old has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in United States.
Sergino Dest has represented United States at Under-17 and Under-20 level, winning 22 caps and scoring one goal, before making his senior international debut in September 2019. As a member of United States national football team, Dest won 17 caps and he scored two goals.
His impressive performances last season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.
Manchester United have built a reputation for recruiting young talent from within Europe, predominantly targeting those with sell-on value and immense potential.
Erik ten Hag wants to sign a new right-back and Sergino Dest is one of the names at the top of his wishlist. He is a long term admirer of Dest and believes he can get the most out of the United States international.
The Premier League giants are desperate to make an impact in the summer transfer window.
The former Ajax man can also play as a full-back, offering Erik ten Hag a different option should he change his formation at Manchester United.
According to the report, “Manchester United have expressed interest in Barcelona fullback Sergino Dest. Sport says Barca would likely agree to his departure if Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta ends up signing, and Manchester United have already been interested in his situation and are willing to pay a transfer fee for his services. Barça would want at least 20 million euros on such a sale to add to their coffers. Dest is a player who manager Erik ten Hag admires, as the fullback is a former Ajax player. As such, contact has been established with Barca for the defender. And Barcelona is fully prepared to sell Dest if Azpilicueta arrives.”
Euro Football Rumours
It would take a huge offer from Manchester United to prise the 21-year-old right-back from Barcelona.
The La Liga giants would be wise to keep the United States international, but if they do let him go expect it to be for a hefty sum.
Good signing for Manchester United?
If Dest is available for the right price, then he could be a clever acquisition for Manchester United.
Sergino Dest has all the skillset required to be a success story at Manchester United. Therefore, it makes sense for Ten Hag to step up his attempts to bring the United States right-back to Premier League side.
Stylistically, he would be a great fit in Manchester.
It will be interesting to see where the player ends up this summer.
