Blue Angels coming to 2018 air show

The lineup for the 2017 Owensboro Air Show is not yet in place, but the city of Owensboro already knows what will headline the 2018 Air Show — the famed U.S. Navy Blue Angels. The city announced on Tuesday afternoon that the Blue Angels flight demonstration team, based in Pensacola, Florida, and known around the world, had selected Owensboro for its 2018 show schedule. The Blue Angels last appeared in Owensboro in 1991. Last year, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds attracted tens of thousands of people to the downtown riverfront for a pair of weekend shows. City Manager Bill Parrish said on Tuesday that Tim Ross, the city’s public events director, was currently attending an air show conference in Las Vegas when the opportunity to book the Blue Angels presented itself and the deal was struck. Parrish said the city’s annual air show has risen to the level that teams like the Blue Angels want to be involved. The Blue Angels fly six F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets, which are supersonic, twin-engine planes capable of reaching almost 1,200 miles per hour, or Mach 1.8. They first flew in 1978.
