What do we mean by ‘15-year education accepting US universities’?

The 15-year education framework, including 12 years of schooling and a 3-year bachelor’s degree, is widely recognised across the globe, including countries like India, Australia, and the UK. In the Indian context, various graduation disciplines such as BA, BCom, and BSc align with the 15-year education model, meeting the criteria for universities in the USA that acknowledge this system for pursuing a Master of Science (MS) abroad. However, it’s important to note that this recognition doesn’t extend to fields like engineering, medicine, law, architecture, etc.

For international applicants armed with a 3-year bachelor’s degree, planning to get into advanced degree programs in the US poses a unique challenge. Unlike the 15-year education structure, which is welcomed in many parts of the world, the typical American educational journey involves 4 years of full-time study.

Do we think it is inconvenient and non-inclusive? Oh yes, so let’s get to the next important question –

What can you do if your preferred university doesn’t fall under universities accepting 15 years of education in US?

While some universities in the US and Canada need a 16-year (12+4) education for specific postgraduate programs, there are avenues to work around this prerequisite. If your preferred university falls under this category, it’s recommended that you reach out to their admissions committees for guidance.

Options for Meeting the 16-Year Requirement:

  1. International Transfer: Consider transferring during your undergraduate years to a US university for the 3rd and 4th years of education. This may extend your undergraduate timeline while fulfilling the necessary criteria.
  2. Postgraduate Degree from India: Pursue a year-long postgraduate degree, such as an M.Com., in India, and then apply for master’s or Ph.D. programs abroad.
  3. PG Diploma or Pre-MBA Course: Opt for a PG Diploma or pre-MBA course from foreign universities, followed by application to the desired degree program. Reach out to admissions committees for specific details. And the best of all –
  4. Credential Evaluation with WES: For those with Indian 3-year undergraduate degrees, the World Education Services (WES) offers a path to equivalence with U.S. undergraduate degrees. Wondering why we didn’t pitch this first? Waittt a mminute

What are the key criteria for WES/ World Education Services evaluation?

We can safely say that WES evaluation has more than one catch! But here are some key criteria to meet WES evaluation, if your preferred university doesn’t fall under universities accepting 15 years of education in US:

  • Your degrees should fall under the Division-1 category.
  • The university granting the undergraduate degree must be accredited by India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council or NAAC with an ‘A’ grade or better.
  • For 3-Year Bachelor’s Applicants: It’s essential to note that requirements differ across institutions and programs. Some universities may request additional qualifications, such as a postgraduate diploma or relevant work experience, to compensate for the shorter duration of a 3-year degree.

Some of the universities that do require WES evaluation in USA are San Jose State University, New York University of Technology, University of Colorado, Denver, George Mason University (Scholaro report), University of Miami, St. Johns University (SpanTran)

Seattle Pacific University, New York University – School of Professional Studies, among others.

Other than the US, which country accepts 15 years of education for a master’s degree?

While many universities in the US and Canada need a 16-year (12+4) education for specific postgraduate programs, most other countries don’t.  The United Kingdom, Australia and several European countries do not require a 16-year education. These countries are also among the most popular study-abroad destinations.
