1690 | Yakut Khan, a Siddi general, razed the Mazagon Fort. The Mazagon Fort was a British fort in Mazagaon, Mumbai. It was built around 1680. In 1689, Yakut Khan, with 20,000 soldiers invaded Mumbai. |
1783 | Laki, a volcano in Iceland started an 8 month-eruption. It poured out estimated 14 K.M.3 basalt lava and poisonous clouds of SO₂ and acid compounds. This calamity caused death of 50% of Iceland's livestock population. The volcanic eruption led to a famine which killed 25% population of Iceland. |
1938 | Fossils of a 'robust-type' hominid were discovered at Kromdraai, Blaauwbank River Valley in South Africa. This hominid was later named as Paranthropus Robustus by Robert Broom. Paranthropus Robustus is dated to have lived between 2 and 1.2 million years ago. |
1953 | The Supreme Court of United States ruled that restaurants in Washington D.C. could not refuse to serve black patrons. Earlier, blacks in America were denied of basic human rights due to racism. |

2007 | The Space Shuttle Atlantis was launched with a crew of seven on an assembly mission to the International Space Station on mission STS-117. Atlantis is the 4th operational and the second-to-last Space Shuttle built. |
2011 | Indian social activist Anna Hazare began second hunger strike against corruption. The anti corruption movement 2011 is considered as one of the largest public movements of independent India. The aim of this movement was to establish a strong constitutional body against corruption. |
