• Yoga, India’s one of the ancient practices to keep oneself healthy, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
• Nine-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt on 2 December 2016 won the IAAF male Athlete of the Year award. He won the award for the record sixth time.
• Senior IPS officer Rakesh Asthana was on 3 December 2016 appointed as the Interim Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was given this additional charge by the Union Government following retirement of Anil Sinha.
• India women’s cricket team on 4 December 2016 defeated Pakistan to win the 2016 Asia Cup T20 at Bangkok, Thailand. India defeated Pakistan in the final of the regional tournament by 17 runs. The win is India’s sixth Asia Cup crown.
• Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa who suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday passed away on 5 December 2016. She was 68. AIADMK supremo breathed her last at 11:30 PM at Apollo Hospital, Chennai.
• Chief Justice of India TS Thakur on 6 December 2016 recommended Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar’s name to be the 44th Chief Justice of India. Justice Thakur wrote a letter recommending the name of Justice Khehar, who is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court to be his successor.
• The 2016 World Power Language Index in the first week of December 2016 announced that English language is the most powerful language in the world. The index was published by World Economic Forum. The Index ranked English first in the top 10 most powerful languages in the world. Hindi language was ranked 10th in the 2016 PLI.
• Former US astronaut John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, died on 8 December 2016. He was 95. The ex-Marine and Senator had been in hospital in Columbus, Ohio, for more than a week.
• The Enforcement Directorate has summoned the officials of AirAsia India to investigate the airline’s alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) regulations
• The Uttarakhand High Court has directed the state government to impose a blanket ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in three districts of the state.
• Indian Test Captain Virat Kohli on 11 December 2016 became the first Indian cricketer to score three double-hundreds in a calendar year. He scored his third double-century in the first innings of the third test match against England.
• Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu awarded with Badminton World Federation (BWF) Most Improved Player of the Year award at the Players’ Reception and Gala Dinner in Dubai on December 12, 2016.
• Vodafone India launched Vodafone M Pesa Pay to enable merchants and retailers to receive payments from their customers on December 13, 2016. It will also enable to M Pesa customers.
• Assam government on December 14, 2016 has initiated a project named‘Sustainable Action for Climate Resilient Development in Majuli’ to make river island Majuli the country’s first ever Carbon Neutral district by 2020.
• The Gujarat government on December 15, 2016, approved an order to ban hookah bars across the state. The decision was taken at a meeting of the State Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

• The New Development Bank, jointly found by the BRICS countries approved USD 75 million (525 million yuan) loan for a solar power project in Shanghai, China on December 20, 2016.
• India’s Ravichandran Ashwin won the International Cricket Council’s Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Cricketer of the Year 2016 award on Thursday.
• Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung submitted his resignation to the Union Government on 22 December 2016. He resigned 18 months short of his tenure.
• India on 23 December 2016 won the Asian Cricket Council Under-19s Asia Cup title. In the final played at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, India defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 34 runs.
• The Jnanpith Selection Board on 23 December 2016 conferred the 52nd Jnanpith Award on eminent modern Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh.

• Gujarat government lead by Vijay Rupani introduced the  ‘Biotechnology Policy-2016‘ to establish Gujarat as a preferred destination for manufacturing of biotechnology products. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel announced this policy in the state legisalative assembly on December 26, 2016.
• Renowned Rajasthani litterateur Satya Narayan was chosen for the 26th Bihari Puraskar 2016 by K K Birla Foundation. This was the 26th year of the award.
• Former IAS officer Anil Baijal is all set to be appointed as the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The approval for his appointment was given on 28 December 2016 by President Pranab Mukherjee.
• Sasikala Natarajan, a close friend and confidante of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, today formally took over as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s general secretary.
• The Reserve Bank of India has relaxed the daily ATM withdrawal limit to Rs 4500 from the limit of Rs 2500 on 30 December 2016. The new limit would be applicable from January 1, 2017.However, the weekly withdrawal limit of Rs 24,000 remains unchanged.
• Justice Saqib Nisar took oath on Saturday as the Chief Justice of Pakistan, replacing Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali who has retired. Justice Nisar is the 25th head of the Supreme Court and will hold the top post for two years.
