ANSWER: Earth is called a uniques planet in the solar system for the following reasons:

a) Earth is the only planet that supports life. It has oxygen and water that allows life to sustain.

b) It is located at favourable distance from the sun. Therefore, it not too cold nor too hot.

c) The Earth’s atmosphere supports life as it acts as a blanket to prevent harmful ultraviolet rays from sun to enter the earth.

4. Write a short note on the Moon.

ANSWER: The moon is 3,84,000km away from the earth. It appears so big in the sky because it is the nearest celestial body from earth. It takes 27 days for 1 revolution around the earth and moon rotates on its axis and same time as revolution. Neil Armstrong was the first person who walked on the surface on the moon on 21st July 1969.

5. Briefly describe eight planets and their satellites.

ANSWER:

a) Mercury: It has no satellites.

b) Venus: It has no satellites.

c) Earth: Our planet has one satellite which is Moon.

d) Mars: It has 2 satellites. Phobos and Deimos are two satellites.

e) Jupiter: It has 67 satellites. Ganymede is largest satellite of the solar system.

f) Saturn: It has 62 satellites. Titan is the second largest satellite of the solar system.

g) Uranus: It has 27 satellites.

h) Neptune: It has 13 satellites.

6. Briefly describe asteroids, meteors, meteorites and comets.

ANSWER: Asteroids are small planet like bodies.

1. What are planets?

ANSWER: Planets are celestial bodies that revolve around the sun in fixed elliptical paths called as orbit. ‘Planet’ in Greek is called as ‘wanderer’.

2. Why is the Earth called a ‘blue planet’?

ANSWER: Earth is called as blue planet because astronauts when see the earth from space, Eath appears blue because 71% of the surface of earth is covered with water.

3. What is ‘Great Bear’ or the Saptarishi Mandal?

ANSWER: ‘Great Bear’ or the Saptarishi Mandal is one of the constellations visible in the northern sky. There are two stars at the head of the constellation which are called as pointers and they point towards pole star.

4. What is meant by solar system?

ANSWER: Solar system consists of:

sun at the center.

eight planets revolve around the sun.

satellites revolve around the planets.

Other celestial bodies such as asteroids, meteors and comets.

They all bound by the sun’s gravity.

5. Name any two dwarf planets.

ANSWER: Pluto and Ceres

The Earth is termed as ‘ Blue Planet’ of the Solar System. What can be done so that the Earth remains a ‘Blue Planet’? Write any two activities.

Earlier, Pluto was considered a planet. Now it has been put into the category of a dwarf planet. Why?

ANSWER: Three rules must be followed to be in the category planet:

It should not be moon of any other planet.

It should clear its path.

It should orbit the sun.

Being so small, pluto do not clear its path, thus not follow rules to be in category of planet. Therefore, IAU declared that pluto is no more planet and declared as dwarf planet in 2006.
