1. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of natural fabrics.

ANSWER: Advantages of natural fabrics:

a) They absorbs more water and sweat.

b) They allow air to pass through them.

c) They are biodegradable and thus do not affect environment.

Disadvantages of natural fabrics:

a) They do not dry rapidly.

b) They may shrink on washing.

2. How do you obtain jute fibres from their plants? Explain.

ANSWER: Firstly, seeds are sown in march or april. The plants are cut during the flowering stage as good quality jute is obtained from its young stem. After harvesting, the stalks of bundles are tied and left in stagnant water as bacteria grows easily in stagnant water. Bateria eat the sticky matter that holds the fibres to inner part of stem. This process is called as retting. After rotting, fibres are separated by hands and dried in the sun. They are then sent to mills for woven into textiles.

3. Discuss the uses of jute.

ANSWER: They are used for making sacks or gunny bags.

They are woven into curtains, carpets etc.

They are used for as sacs for packing cereals.

1. Radhika on a very cold day, took three blankets to keep her warm whereas her brother, Raghav, took only one thick blanketwith thickness equal to 3 blankets. Who will get more warmth and why?

ANSWER: Three blankets that are taken by Radhika are warmer than one thick blanket taken by Raghav because air is trapped between three blankets. The air is bad conductor of heat which means it does not pass heat from blanket to the surroundings.

2. Mansi is planning to visit Jaipur and Jodhpur during her summer vacation. What should she keep with her- nylon leggings or cotton pants with kurtas? Why?

ANSWER: Jaipur and jhodpur are hot states in summer. Thus, Mansi should wear cotton clothes as they are natural fibres and absorb sweat. It helps the body to be cool. Nylon is a synthetic fibre and does not absorb sweat.

Application based questions:

1. Which fabric will you wear while working in the kitchen- cotton or polyester? Why?

ANSWER: We should wear cotton clothes while working in the kitchen as they are natural fibres and do not catch fire easily. They also absorb sweat while working in the kitchen and makes our body cool. Polyester is a synthetic fabric that catches fire easily and also it does not absorb sweat.

2. Aman’s mom is a working woman who leaves for her office early in the morning. She takes a metro to the office and returns late in the evening. What type of fabrics should she use for her dress?

ANSWER: She should wear cotton clothes as they are natural fibres and absorbs sweat that makes our body cool. Synthetic fibres such as polyester do not absorb sweat.
