Inheritance in genetics is defined as the process in which traits or characteristics are transferred from parents to offsprings.

Gregor Mendel worked on pea plants and discovered the laws of inheritance. His ideas about inheritance of traits depends on genes which are transmissible factors.

Mendel’s key ideas about inheritance are:

  1. He postulated that different forms of genes are called as alleles and each organism carries two copies of each gene from each parent.
  2. During reproduction, genes segregate or separate so that offspring inherit one allele from each parent. This is called as The Law of Segregation.
  3. Different traits are expressed as inheritance of one trait is not dependent on the inheritance of another. Genes sorted randomly and independently to produce new genetic combinations and thus develops genetic variations among the population. This is called as The Law of Independent Assortment.
  4. An individual with will express dominant form of gene. This is called as The Law of Dominance.
