Google acquires Halli Labs, a Bengaluru-based company

Google has acquired Halli Labs, a Bengaluru-based start-up which works on artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions. A short message on the company’s website’s homepage (www.hallilabs.com) reads: “We are excited to share that the Halli Labs team is joining Google.” There’s no other information available about the company on its website. Earlier in the day, the company also tweeted the same message from its Twitter account.

Halli Labs was founded by Pankaj Gupta, who was earlier the chief technology officer for Stayzilla. In a blog post on Medium, Halli Labs is described as, “Halli Labs is applying modern ML techniques to old problems and domains to help technology march on in its timeless purpose— that of giving superhuman powers to all of us humans in letting us do whatever we want to do, better.”

Halli Labs is just a four-month-old company and apart from Gupta, it has Pradhuman Jhala as its prominent team member. Jhala has also worked with Stayzilla and Flipkart as an architect.
No concrete details about the acquisition have been disclosed as of now. The deal, however, signifies Google’s intentions about the Indian market. The tech giant’s “Next Billion” programme is aimed at a large contingent of the non-English speaking population – India constitutes a large chunk of this market.
The acquisition of Halli Labs is clearly a part of the programme. On Medium, Halli Labs wrote about the acquisition and said, “We will be joining Google’s Next Billion Users team to help get more technology and information into more people’s hands around the world.
