Who should Alan Pardew recruit in January? Chelsea and Spurs men listed

Crystal Palace have conceded the third most goals in the Premier League season. Alan Pardew’s men have been involved in a number of goal-fests this season, losing 5-4 to Swansea and drawing 3-3 with Hull. Their defence has leaked goals and with The Eagles facing Chelsea on Saturday the odds at tipsters like the guys over at SBAT don’t look great for the London team.

Pardew is said to be in the January market for a new defensive recruitment as the back four at Selhurst Park has become hampered by injuries.

Staggeringly, the worst of injuries to their defence has come away from the pitch. Senegal international Pape Souare was airlifted to hospital just six weeks into the season, after being involved in a car crash on the M4. Souare suffered a number of muscle injuries and a broken thigh and jaw in the collision and three months on, the defender has admitted he is still uncertain of what the future may hold regarding his injury. The defender had to be cut from the mangled wreck of his Mercedes and he and Pardew have acknowledged how lucky the defender has been. Souare has been a huge miss to the Palace defence, since his arrival from Lille in January 2015, the 26-year-old had made 46 Premier League appearances.

James Tomkins has also picked up a knock recently and with the Palace injury seemingly every growing, they’re certainly in for a busy January. But who can Pardew bring in to ease their injury woes?

Pardew has recently spoke of his desire to sign a left-sided defender and who more of a perfect fit than Kieran Gibbs? The Arsenal man is second choice at the Emirates and has featured seldom this season as Nacho Monreal seems to have pipped him to a starting spot. The 27-year-old would make a good loan signing and it’s a move that would suit all parties, Palace would be getting a competent defender whilst Gibbs wouldn’t have to relocate and would be getting some valuable playing time under his belt.

Kurt Zouma would also fit the bill at Palace. The centre-back suffered a nasty ACL injury last season and has recently returned but has not yet made his way back into the starting XI.

Chelsea are playing the best football in the league at the minute and with Conte opting to play three at the back, Zouma has a line of players in front of him. A loan move to Selhurst Park would afford him some much needed game time and allow him to build his confidence back up after that nightmare injury. His physicality and pace would add a lot to a strained backline.

Ben Davies would also be a good fit for Alan Pardew. The Welshmen is out of favour at White Hart Lane as Danny Rose has made his mark as first choice left-back. Davies has of course featured for Spurs in Europe this season but it’s likely that the 23-year-old will be after regular game-time. He would add something in defence but is also great acting as a wing-back as he likes to get forward when possible. It’s thought that he’d be available for around the £7million mark and in today’s market, that’s incredible value.
