Husker Softball Recap - Nebraska 7 Rutgers 6

What. A. Comeback. The Huskers win the series with a 7-6 win today and advance to 25-16 on the season

The Huskers played their series finale against the Scarlet Knights from Rutgers today and the weather finally decided to be in their favor today for a huge Nebraska comeback.

Piscataway saw a 70 degree day with winds down to about 14mph. This was a very nice change to yesterdays 50 degree, 40mph day.

One positive of the day was that we saw Brooke Andrews enter the lineup as the DP after sitting out yesterday with an upper calf injury.

Rutgers got going early and quickly going up 2-0 in the 1st Inning. They must’ve been a little mad after we run ruled them yesterday...

Of course it was none other than Morgan Smith that brought in a runner for Rutgers first with an RBI triple on an error from Brooke Andrews.

Smith ended up stealing home, later in the inning, to put Rutgers ahead 2-0. I think Husker fans knew this was going to be a long game after seeing how energized Rutgers was in that first inning.

The Huskers had a play in the 2nd inning that showed some fight and that the play isn’t over until it is over.

Jillian Anderson, of the Scarlet Knights, reached 1st base while Maddie Lawson got tagged out at second. The ball, was then, overthrown to first, but Anderson overran first base. The Huskers ended up bringing the ball back into play and tagging out Anderson after this.

Anderson was a little frustrated but ultimately this ended this inning and got the Huskers out of the second without giving up more runs.

The Huskers probably wished they could have had the third inning back after giving up more runs and accruing more errors.

Katie Wingert extended the Scarlet Knights lead to 3-0 after an RBI bunt that brought Kyleigh Sand home.

Leilani Chavez should’ve been thrown out at first, but another Nebraska throwing error that went clear over Bella Bacon’s head helped her reach base. Morgan Smith scored and made the score 4-0 Rutgers on this play.

At this point in the 3rd inning, Nebraska already had 2 errors. This just showed that Nebraska needs to be more sharp on throws to possibly save some runs.

Nebraska finally got on the board in the top of the 4th inning when Caitlynn Neal hit a home run to start the effort of chasing down Rutgers. Neal made the score 4-1.

The Huskers had the chance to make the score 4-2 when Sydney Gray tried to run home on a Rutgers dropped ball from a Katelyn Caneda hit in the outfield. Gray was eventually tagged out at home and the score remained 4-1.

After Rutgers got two straight hits to start the bottom of the 4th, Rhonda Revelle decided that Kaylin Kinney’s day was over and Sarah Harness came in to relieve her.

The pitching change didn’t do too much good to start as Kyleigh Sand had a fielders choice RBI to bring Maddie Lawson home and make the score 5-1 Rutgers.

Rutgers extended their lead, in the bottom of the 5th, to 6-1 after Payton Lincavage hit a homer.

I thought the Huskers were down and out when the 6th inning came along and this recap started somberly when the Huskers were down bad.

I knew I should never count the Huskers out though because they came back in a BIG way to start the 6th inning.

It all started with a Sydney Gray RBI double that brought Caitlynn Neal home and make the score 6-2.

Katelyn Caneda had a fielders choice RBI that brought Bella Bacon home and cut the Rutgers score in half to 6-3.

Peyton Cody followed that up with a fielders choice RBI of her own that brought Sydney Gray home and the score to 6-4.

With bases loaded, Sam Bland hit an RBI double that brought in McKinley Malecha and Billie Andrews to tie the game at 6.

All I can say is wow what an inning. The Huskers put themselves back into position to win the game and it was something that wasn’t expected after watching a game that had some silly errors.

Neither the Huskers nor the Scarlet Knights had any runs in the 7th inning so we saw some extra softball today.

The Huskers picked up their first lead of the day, at 7-6, when Peyton Cody had and RBI single that brought Billie Andrews home in the top of the 8th.

Rutgers couldn’t get anything going in the bottom of the 8th to give the Huskers an amazing and well earned 7-6 win today.

The Huskers scored 6 unanswered runs to take the win right out of the hands of a Rutgers team who thought they had this game locked up in the 6th inning.

The Huskers will travel back to Lincoln for the week before taking yet another trip, but this time to Michigan.

The series will start on Friday at 6:00PM CST followed by a Saturday game set to start at 1:00PM CST. The series finale will be played on Sunday at 12:00PM CST.

Right now it looks like Fridays game will be on FS1 while the others will probably be on B1G+.
