The country music star adds a concert to Nebraska’s sellout streak.

I suppose that when Nebraska announced that Garth Brooks would play Memorial Stadium in the round on Saturday night, August 14, 2021, it was more of a question of “when” not “if” the concert would sell out.

And for those of you keeping score at home, it only took 100 minutes for all of the tickets to disappear.

It’s unclear just how many tickets were sold, as Memorial Stadium’s official seating capacity is 85,458. (Attendance at Nebraska football games includes media, stadium workers and football personnel, which regularly pushes announced crowds towards 90,000.) But with seats set up on Tom Osborne Field, it’s likely to approach 95,000.

Update: Nebraska just announced that 83,600 tickets were sold. Apparently some seats in the stadium were not available for this concert.

Ticketing used a virtual queue to manage the load in the system, with waits of a half-hour or more to get into order tickets common. You just needed to make sure you didn’t close out your browser and lose your place in line.

Shortly after 11 am, availability started to get sketchy for larger groups of tickets as the stadium filled, and by 11:15 am, only singles and pairs were available. Historically for past shows, Garth has added additional concerts to meet the demand as shows sold out, but not on this stadium tour. In 2015, Brooks added four shows at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center to sell over 90,000 tickets, beating the previous record of 66,000 that Brooks himself set in 1997 at the Devaney Center.

Now he’s apparently broken that record again. Previous non-football events at Memorial Stadium have not been in the round, such as 1987’s Farm Aid concert, which drew around 69,000 fans with the north stadium seats blocked by the stage.

Nebraska’s sellout streak remains intact.
