Kind of a rare thing.

From the Nebraska athletic department:

Three-time Nebraska track and field All-American Angela Mercurio was named the Ncaa Woman of the Year at the award ceremony on Sunday night.

Mercurio was a four-year letterwinner on the Nebraska track and field team and was a three-time second-team All-American in the triple jump. She also earned the conference title in the event at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships before going on to place ninth in the triple jump at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships.

I’m not gonna pretend to know a lot about this. Do I wish we covered track and field?

Yes. We should cover all Nebraska sports. I still hope to get there.

Look at this:

A native of Kitchener, Ontario, Mercurio was a two-time Google Cloud Academic All-America Second Team selection, as well as a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. Earlier this year, she was also a recipient of both the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship. Mercurio also was honored as one of the first-ever Rose Bowl Game Keith Jackson Postgraduate Scholarship recipients Wednesday morning. She graduated from Nebraska in May with a 3.99 GPA as a double major in biochemistry and women’s & gender studies.

What I see is - she is from Canada, and who doesn’t love the Canucks?

That, and a 3.99 in biochemistry?

Holy cow. You’re not that smart. I’m not that smart. The guy who sat in front of me in my Chem 109 final - that guy was apparently that smart. Not me.

She is in rare company. Given all the stuff we get about the Big Ten and Olympic sports, this is pretty cool.
