Martinez Named to Walter Camp Watch List

Adrian Martinez made his fourth watch list in the last two weeks, as the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Martinez as one of 40 “players to watch” for its 2019 Player of the Year award. The Husker signal caller is entering his sophomore season after being named a freshman All-American and after setting multiple school records in his first season.

Martinez looks to join a trio of Huskers who have won the Walter Camp winners, joining previous winners Johnny Rodgers (1972), Mike Rozier (1983) and Eric Crouch (2001). Martinez is one of seven Big Ten players on the Water Camp preseason list.

Earlier this month, Martinez was named to the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien Award watch lists, as well as earning a place on the Big Ten’s Players to Watch list.

Spielman on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List

Junior wide receiver JD Spielman picked up his second watch list recognition being named to the 2019 Paul Hornung Award. Spielman also made the 2018 preseason list and is one of 44 players, including eight from the Big Ten, on the initial watch list. The award is presented to the most versatile player in college football.

Spielman, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound wide receiver, has a chance to finish his junior season as the most productive receiver in school history and has ranked in the top five in the Big Ten in all-purpose yards per game in both of his seasons playing on Tom Osborne field. He enters his junior campaign needing only 68 catches and 1,099 yards to break NU career records in both categories.

For a guy that is “too small” he is certainly moving up the record books fast.

Spielman will look to be NU’s first-ever winner of the honor. Ameer Abdullah was a finalist in 2014. The last three winners have come from the Big Ten, including 2018 recipient Rondale Moore of Purdue.

Stille Nominated for Wuerffel Trophy

Nebraska native and defensive linemen Ben Stille was announced as one of the candidates for the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy. The Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

It is the second watch list for Stille, who was named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® watch list last week. Stille is one of seven Big Ten players on the 86-member list.

Stille has been active in the Huskers’ Life Skills program, volunteering his time with the FCA, Husker Heroes, TeamMates, the Nebraska Football Road Race and local hospital visits. For his efforts, he received the Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award earlier this spring, and was named to the Tom Osborne and Brook Berringer Citizenship teams for the past three years. Earlier this year, he was also involved in the Husker football team’s efforts for raise money for flood relief victims following the spring floods across Nebraska.

This is a great recognition for a player that has worked his tail off to rise up the depth chart and speaks volumes to his character and to the type of person Nebraska wants on their team. Let’s hope he is getting looks for on-field postseason watch lists because if players like Stille can power the Blackshirts to an improved season, then some of the overly-optimistic preseason Husker hype may be warranted.

Frost Named to Dodd Trophy Watch List

The Dodd Trophy, college football’s most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s coaching philosophy. [Insert your own jokes about the number of players getting caught with pot in their dorm rooms here.] This year’s list includes 23 of the nation’s top college football coaches.

The watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, taking into consideration each program’s graduation rate, commitment to service and charity in the community, projected success for the 2019 season and Academic Progress Rate (APR). Coaches in the first year with their current team are ineligible to receive The Dodd Trophy.

“The Dodd Trophy is the most coveted coach of the year award because it looks beyond just the results on the field and measures the overall impact these coaches have had on their players, universities and communities,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation.

Coming off a 4-8 year, it seems strange to see Coach Frost on this list, but the UCF turnaround he orchestrated was so remarkable that it continues to influence how people see his second year with Nebraska. Nebraska has prided itself on Academic All-Americans in football (and all sports) and on its legendary Student Life Skills program, so it is good to see that all of the infrastructure, combined with a coach who values the details, come together and be noticed by others.
