Kelvin Beachum is taking it day-by-day at Jaguars camp

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Kelvin Beachum in free agency as kind of a roll of the dice, considering the former Pittsburgh Steelers Left Tackle was not yet medically cleared to practice. He tore his ACL last season and missed the majority of the year, but prior to doing so was one of the better left tackles in the NFL. The hope for the Jaguars is that Beachum can get healthy, regain that form and win the Starting Left Tackle job. So far, he’s taken the first step in being medically cleared for the first day of training camp and participating on the field, but that doesn’t mean he’s 100 percent just yet.

“I think that is tough to establish,” Beachum said when he was asked when he would feel 100 percent. “I talked to the GM [Dave Caldwell] and Coach Gus [Bradley] and the training staff, and the strength and conditioning staff and you know I do not know what the time will be, but I am taking it one day at a time- being patient is the hardest thing for a football player.”

Beachum was on the field Thursday for the first day of training camp, taking walk through reps at both tackle and guard, but he didn’t do any full team reps just yet. That’s not unexpected however, as the team planned to ease him into the lineup and be careful of not aggravating his knee injury.

“It is kind of hard having reigns put on you, but I am just taking it day-by-day and learning as I go,” Beachum told reporters. “It is a new body to an extent- it hasn’t taken football reps since October, so I am taking it a day at a time and making sure that I am listening. Like I said, I am excited about the opportunity.”

Beachum figures to be starting on the Jaguars offensive line in one form or another Week 1 in 2016, be it at left tackle or left guard. Most tend to think if he’s healthy he will be the team’s starting left tackle, and the type of contract the Jaguars gave him seems to lean towards they think he will as well.
