Jacksonville Jaguars sign cornerback Nevin Lawson

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Lawson previously played with the Detroit Lions and Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. In a corresponding move, the Jaguars placed tight end James O’Shaughnessy on injured reserve.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are dealing with a few injuries at the cornerback position, so the team has signed veteran Cornerback Nevin Lawson, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer confirmed the signing during his Wednesday media availability.

Both C.J. Henderson and Tre Herndon are questionable for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to Meyer. Henderson left last week’s game against the Denver Broncos with a hip injury and did not return. Herndon has missed Jacksonville’s first two games of the season with a knee injury.

To make room for Lawson, the Jaguars placed tight end James O’Shaughnessy on injured reserve with an ankle injury. That means O’Shaughnessy will miss a minimum of three weeks.

Lawson, now in his eighth year in the NFL, was drafted out of Utah State by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 2014 draft (No. 133 overall). In college, he was a first-team All-Mountain West Conference selection in 2013, and a second-team selection in 2012.

He played with the Lions for five seasons before being released in March of 2019. Lawson signed with the then Oakland Raiders for the 2019 campaign, and moved to Las Vegas with the team in 2020.

Overall, Lawson has played in 88 career games with 68 starts. He recorded 290 total tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, 34 passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, according to Pro Football Reference. He has zero career interceptions, however.

Lawson played 14 games, with nine starts, for the Raiders in 2020. He recorded 61 tackles, one sack, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery last season. He allowed 45 catches on 67 targets (67.2 percent) for 483 yards and five touchdowns. He also had a passer rating allowed of 113.0 in 2020.
