Though he was selected with the first-overall pick, Lawrence has yet to be handed over the reigns as the team’s unquestioned starting quarterback.

Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer is not ready to name his Week 1 starting quarterback.

With the preseason in Jacksonville set to begin in just two short days, there remains a question of who will receive the first-first team repetitions as the Jaguars get set to prepare for its Week 1 matchup against the Houston Texans.

As the team gets set to face the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, the first preseason matchup for Jacksonville, Meyer was asked a variety of questions surrounding his quarterbacks, including who will receive the nod to take snaps from the starting unit.

According to Meyer, that has yet to be determined.

“We’ll finalize that tonight,” Meyer said on Thursday. “I asked [Passing Game Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer] Schotty and [Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell] Bev, but they’ll both play. A lot of it’s who’s going to be behind. We just want to make sure we have protected both those quarterbacks, but both will play.”

Through training camp, the Jaguars have allowed both Gardner Minshew and first-overall selection, Trevor Lawrence, to take snaps with the first-team offense. On certain days, Minshew will take the bulk of the snaps, while Lawrence will take the remainder and vice versa.

While incredibly unlikely, it has left the impression that it is currently up in the air whether or not Lawrence will be the team’s starting quarterback when the regular season begins.

When asked directly whether or not there’s a chance Lawrence may not be the team’s Week 1 starter, Meyer was frank about where he’s at.

“Is there really a chance? I think we’ll answer that as we get closer,” he said. When asked again if there was an open competition, Meyer would only confirm it with a very simple, “yes.”

During training camp, Lawrence and Minshew have both taken plenty of snaps with the first-team unit, taking snaps from under center with Brandon Linder. While Minshew has played well, it has been Lawrence that has captivated members of the media and other onlookers as they watched the two quarterbacks practice.

Though Meyer didn’t know much about Minshew when he first stepped in as the team’s head coach, the third-year QB has left an impression on his head coach during training camp over the past few weeks.

“I knew his coach very well, [Gardner Minshew III’s head coach at Washington State] Mike Leach. I don’t say we got off to a bad start, but I just didn’t see very much of him,” Meyer said when asked about Minshew.

“But he’s earned my respect. I love that guy. He’s a warrior competitor, he’s a fighter. I told him that. I just have great respect for Minshew. He brings it every day now, every day.”

Minshew has said in the past that he doesn’t want to play second fiddle to anyone and has made jokes regarding just that. It appears there is a competition, at least on the forefront, but ultimately, with the team selecting Lawrence first overall, it’s unlikely to land in his favor.
