The Jaguars have finalized its coaching staff, officially announcing the hires this morning.

After nearly a month of work and preparation, it appears Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has found his coaching staff.

The Jaguars and Meyer announced the additions to his staff earlier this morning, headlined by offensive coordinator Darrell Bevel, passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Joe Cullen and special teams coordinator Brian Schneider.

The Jaguars will be retaining five members from the previous coaching staff with offensive line coach George Warhop retaining his position on Meyer’s staff. This will likely add continuity to the staff, giving the team’s offensive line an extra year to gel together learning under the same leadership.

Along with Warhop, the Jaguars are retaining both of its secondary coaches in Tim Walton (cornerbacks) and Joe Danna (nickels). They are also retaining Assistant linebackers coach Tony Gilbert and assistant strength coach Cedric Scott.

As for members of the off-field staff, the Jaguars are retaining assistant to the head coach ElizaBeth Mayers and director of team administration Tyler Wolf.

While it did take quite some time, Meyer was intent on bringing on the best coaching staff possible to be with him during his first year as an NFL coach.

The Jaguars head coach would make that abundantly clear when he was hired when he was asked about the timetable of hiring a coaching staff.

“First of all, I’ve got to get a great staff, not a good staff, a great staff,” Meyer said in early January. “And when people are recommended, I’ve had a multitude of people calling and my comment is to save the recommendation unless you feel that person is elite in all areas. Because that’s what Jacksonville deserves and that’s what we’re going to have on our staff.”

Here is the official staff of the Jacksonville Jaguars:

Head coach: Urban Meyer

Offense:

Offensive coordinator: Darrell Bevell

Bevell most recently spent time with the Detroit Lions as offensive coordinator and eventually interim head coach following Matt Patricia’s firing after Thanksgiving.

Passing-game coordinator: Brian Schottenheimer

Schottenheimer most recently was the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator from 2018-20. This year, the Seahawks were one of the best offenses in the NFC, at least for some time.

Wide receivers coach: Sanjay Lal

Lal most recently coached with the Seattle Seahawks as a senior offensive assistant. Prior to that, Lal coached with the Dallas Cowboys as the team’s wide receivers coach from 2018-19.

Running backs coach: Bernie Parmalee

Parmalee, another former NFL player from 1992-2000, most recently spent time with the Atlanta Falcons as the team’s special teams coordinator and has coached running backs on and off again for the Falcons since 2018. Parmalee began his NFL coaching career in 2002 as the Miami Dolphins’ tight ends coach and special teams coach.

Offensive line coach: George Warhop

Warhop is the only member of the last regime’s coaching staff to be retained by Meyer. Under Warhop, the Jaguars’ offensive line improved greatly from 2019 to 2020 even while taking the field with three different quarterbacks last season.

Assistant offensive line coach: Todd Washington

A former NFL offensive lineman, Washington began his coaching career at the collegiate level, an offensive line coach at the University of San Diego. He most recently coached with the New York Jets as an offensive assistant from 2019-20.

Tight ends coach: Tyler Bowen

Bowen spent last season as Penn State’s co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. Penn State has had multiple tight ends drafted under Bowen, with many having success in the NFL, the most recent being Mike Gesicki with the Miami Dolphins. Current NFL Draft hopeful Pat Freirmuth, who was also coached by Bowen, is expected to go high in this year’s draft, too.

Offensive quality control coach: Quinton Ganther

Ganther played for Urban Meyer at Utah, and played in the NFL for several seasons. He most recently served as running backs coach for Weber State from 2014 through 2020. Ganther also participated in the Bill Walsh NFL diversity coaching fellowship with the Seahawks in 2013, where he assisted with coaching the running backs. He was a student assistant coach in 2012 at Utah.

Offensive assistant coach: Will Harriger

Harriger spent the past two seasons in Atlanta as the Falcons’ offensive assistant in 2019 and game management coordinator in 2020. He was promoted to the team’s running backs coach position for Weeks 6-17. Previously, he spent five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks from 2014-18 beginning his tenure as an offensive assistant in 2014 and then promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2016 working with a Russel Wilson.

Defense:

Defensive coordinator: Joe Cullen

Cullen has spent the past five years as the Ravens’ defensive line coach and has spent a total of 15 years in the NFL, getting his first gig as the Detroit Lions’ defensive line coach in 2006.

Secondary coach (safeties): Chris Ash

Ash’s most recent role was with Texas as not only the team’s defensive coordinator but as the safeties coach, too under Tom Herman in 2020. In 2019, he served as an analyst for the Longhorns.

Secondary coach (cornerbacks): Tim Walton

Walton, retained by Urban Meyer from the last staff, enters his third season coaching the secondary for the Jaguars. Walton served as secondary/defensive backs coach for Jacksonville in 2019 and 2020. He enters his 11th year of NFL coaching, and 25th year of coaching overall.

Secondary coach (nickels): Joe Danna

Danna was retained by Meyer from the previous regime. He enters his fifth season in Jacksonville and will now focus solely on nickelbacks. He served as assistant defensive backs coach for the Jaguars in 2017 and 2018, and coached the safeties in 2019 and 2020.

Defensive line coach: Tosh Lupoi

Lupoi most recently served as defensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2020.

Before making the move to the NFL, Lupoi worked under Nick Saban at Alabama from 2014 through 2018. Lupoi served as a defensive analyst in 2014 and 2015. He then took on the role of outside linebackers coach in 2016 and 2017, while also being promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2017, alongside Jeremy Pruitt.

Assistant defensive line coach: Sterling Lucas

Lucas spent the 2020 season as the Ravens’ assistant defensive line coach while spending the previous two seasons as the team’s defensive quality control coach.

Outside linebackers coach: Zach Orr

Orr most recently served as a defensive analyst for the Baltimore Ravens, working with defensive coordinator Joe Cullen.

Inside linebackers coach/Assistant head coach: Charlie Strong

Strong most recently served as a defensive analyst for the National Championship-winning Alabama Crimson Tide in 2020, working under Nick Saban.

An Urban Meyer disciple, Strong coached under Meyer at Florida from 2005 through 2009, before Strong eventually took the head coaching job at Louisville.

Assistant linebackers coach: Tony Gilbert

Gilbert, who actually played for the Jaguars from 2003 through 2007, was also retained by Meyer. He enters his second season as assistant linebackers coach for the Jaguars. Prior to coaching in Jacksonville in 2020, Gilbert previously coached at UCF, North Carolina, Auburn and Georgia.

Defensive quality control coach: Patrick Reilly

From 2018-20, Reily was a defensive analyst at Alabama, overseeing the Crimson Tide’s two College Football Playoff appearances, winning the 2020 National Championship. Riely was originally hired by UCLA in 2016 as a defensive quality control coach prior to being promoted to defensive analyst in 2018.

Senior defensive assistant: Bob Sutton

Sutton has spent the past two seasons in Atlanta serving as the team’s senior defensive assistant, the same role that he will hold with the Jaguars under Meyer. Prior to that, Sutton was the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-18.

Special Teams:

Special teams coordinator: Brian Schneider

Schneider most recently served as special teams coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks under head coach Pete Carroll. Schneider held that role with Seattle since 2010, but took a leave of absence from the team last September for “personal reasons.” He did eventually return to the team, but Larry Izzo was calling the special teams plays at that point.

Assistant special teams coach: Carlos Polk

Polk most recently spent time with the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. A former NFL linebacker, Polk began his coaching career with the San Diego Chargers, the team that originally drafted him in the 2001 NFL Draft.

Remaining staff:

Director of sports performance: Chris Doyle

Doyle was hired as the director of sports performance for the Jacksonville Jaguars. In his role, Doyle will assist the Jaguars strength and conditioning and athletic training programs. Doyle served as the head strength and conditioning coach for the University of Iowa football program from 1999-2019, helping theHawkeyes participate in 16 bowl games, including 11 January bowl games. From 1999-2019, the Hawkeyes accumulated a 162-104 record. From 2005-19, Iowa had a total of 55 players selected in the NFL Draft. Asa strength and conditioning professional, Doyle has tutored more than 200 student-athletes who have advanced to the professional ranks in the NFL, NHL and NBA. Doyle is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCCa).

Head strength and conditioning coach: Anthony Schlegel

Schlegel was hired as the Jaguars head strength and conditioning coach. Prior to joining the Jaguars, Schlegel worked at Ohio State from 2011-15 as the associate director of football sport performance. During his tenure with the Buckeyes, they won the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship and accumulated a record of 44-10. He played collegiately at Ohio State and was selected in the third round (76th overall) of the 2006 draft by the New York Jets. He earned his MBA from the Fisher College of Business and formed The Difference USA, a portable hand placement/striking machine, which was purchased by more than 80 Division I college football programs as well as 20 NFL teams.

Assistant strength coach: Brandon Ireland

Ireland joins the Jaguars as assistant strength coach following four seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Atlanta Falcons. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Ireland graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. In 2007, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise & Sport from the University of Florida. In 2011, he earned a Master of Science degree in human movement from A.T. Still University. Ireland is certified by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and by USA Weightlifting.

Assistant strength coach: Adam Potts

Potts enters his first season as an assistant strength coach for the Jaguars following his first year in the NFL as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Atlanta Falcons. Potts came to Atlanta after serving as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the football program at the University of Texas beginning in 2017. Prior to his work with the Longhorns, Potts spent time as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of California, Berkley (2016-17), Iowa State University (2014-15) and Lamar University (2013-14). A U.S.A. Olympic Weightlifting Competitor since 2013, Potts earned a Master of Science in Health Promotion and Wellness Management from Missouri State University in 2013 and is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Assistant strength coach: Cedric Scott

Scott begins his tenth season on the Jaguars coaching staff as assistant strength coach. Scott worked briefly in 2012 at the University of North Carolina in the strength and conditioning department before joining the Jaguars. He previously served three years (2009-11) at the University of Southern Mississippi on the strength and conditioning staff. Scott was a standout defensive end for Southern Mississippi, where he received his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and his master’s degree in sports administration. He earned All-America honors as a senior defensive end and was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2000. In 2015, Scott was inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

Chief of Staff: Fernando Lovo

Lovo oversees the team’s equipment, football operations, security, team administration and football video departments. In addition, he works directly with Coach Meyer on all off-the-field matters, serving as a liaison between Coach Meyer and all business operations departments. He most recently served in the same role at the University of Texas from 2016-20 following a two-year stint at the University of Houston as the assistant athletic director for football operations. A two-time graduate of the University of Florida, Lovo started his career in Gainesville with the Gators football program, where he served as a football operations assistant for his final two seasons. He also spent three seasons in Columbus, Ohio as Ohio State’s football operations coordinator.

Assistant to the head coach: ElizaBeth Mayers

Director of team administration: Tyler Wolf
