Amongst all the goings-on in South Africa, let's not forget that the Tokyo 2020 (!) Olympics has started and that the Rugby Sevens gets underway very shortly. The Men's competition starts tomorrow - 26th July - and Team GB's men, silver medallists in Rio in 2016, find themselves in a tough pool alongside Olympic champions Fiji, hosts Japan and Canada. Team GB's women - who finished fourth in Rio and who kick off on 29th July - line up alongside New Zealand, Kenya and a Russian squad competing under the acronym "ROC" (Russian Olympic Committee).
I maintain that Sevens isn't quite my cup of tea insofar as it lacks the rhythms and natural ebb and flow of proper Rugby, but I do love the Olympics and the Sevens format is absolutely tailor-made for the Games. And, admittedly, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Sevens competition in Rio where the Fijian men's team in particular were just outstanding.
Good luck to the two GB teams - and here's hoping for a successful Games in Tokyo. Despite all the challenges presented by Covid-19, let's hope the Olympic Games live up to their billing as The Greatest Show on Earth.
