Premiership Rugby: Lifeline for Saracens?

Despite speculation to the contrary I believe that the chances of this English Premiership season being concluded are somewhere between slim and none.

And slim looks likely to leave town any day now.

If this is the case - i.e. if the 2019-20 Premiership season is declared null and void, then a number of questions will need to be addressed, not least what happens to Saracens?

Sarries, as you will recall, were relegated from the Premiership having been found guilty of breaching the salary cap regulations.

Except that they weren't. Technically Saracens were deducted 35 points in November 2019 for breaches of the salary cap in previous seasons, and then in January were deducted a further 70 points - thus ensuring relegation - when it became apparent that they could not operate within the cap this season.

As a result of the points deductions it became mathematically impossible for Saracens to avoid relegation. But now, if the season is declared void, then technically there is no relegation and Saracens remain in the Premiership.

I'm not saying that's right, moral or proper and no doubt the Premiership would still insist on the club being relegated. It's also probable that Saracens will decide to "do the right thing," don the sackcloth and accept their fate.

With so much uncertainty about what the "new normal" will be, however, and with revenues so hard to come by in these unprecedented times, it would be interesting to see what would happen if Saracens did choose to challenge relegation in the event that the Premiership season is voided.
