Mascherano in tears: “It has been a dream come true but it’s time to wake up”

Javier Mascherano received so much love as he said his farewell to Barcelona after almost eight seasons defending the colors of the club.

The 33-year-old was moved to tears as he opened up on his time in Barcelona.

With club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu sitting beside him, Mascherano said: “If anyone has been fortunate, it has been me,”

“Seven and a half years ago, I came here to live a Dream,”

“And now it’s time to wake up. The dream is over.”

“[The dream] lasted longer than I ever would have imagined,” Mascherano continued.

“But the time came to say goodbye, and leaving with all this love is the best thing that can ever happen to anyone.”

On the Secret to the success he enjoyed with the team (18 trophies in total) he said: “The dressing room is the secret to all these years.”

“When I arrived, I thought I would find a difficult dressing room, because of the great players there were and everything they had won.

“But it was the opposite. I found a group of spectacular humans, which is the secret to Barcelona’s success.”

“Puyil, Xavi and Victor [Valdes] got things started, then it changed, but the values remained the same. That’s the secret. These seven years have past super quick. It’s been seven years, but it seems fewer.”
