Barcelona’s new manager Ernesto Valverde had taken a critical look at the defense and has decided to strengthen it.
The club were interested in signing Inigo Martinez from Real Sociedad.
Martinez was a special request from Valverde who is a big favorite and had told the Barcelona board to make a move for the Spaniard.
His release clause with La Real is €32 million euros and Barcelona were expected to pay it. Interest from Barcelona was so strong that he was expected to be the first arrival after Neymar’s departure.
Confirming the interest from Barcelona, Real Sociedad sporting director, Loren said in a press conference:“It’s true Barca have spoke with us.”
“They’ve been in contact to show their interest in the player(Martinez).”
But Barcelona have turned away from the deal for two reasons:
- It appears Valverde is prepared to stick it out until January with the arrival of Yerry Mina from Palmeiras. Barcelona have taken the option to purchase him for €9million and he arrives in January (Read here).
- Thomas Vermaelen is going to be given a chance in the Barcelona team.
