The big news out of Spain today was Cristiano Ronaldo’s trouble with the taxman. Spain’s prosecutors have filed tax charges against Ronaldo for allegedly defrauding the government of a total of €14,768,897 on image rights between 2011 and 2014.
Breakdown by year
2011: €1.39 million euros
2012: €1.66 million euros
2013: €3.2 million euros
2014: € 8.5 million
All the amounts for each year were more than €120,00 which makes the tax fraud a criminal offence.
Carlos Cruzado, president of the Union of Technicians of the Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday that Ronaldo Faces more than 2 years in jail if found guilty.
Cruzado told Spanish radio, Cadena SER: “that can go from 2 to 6 years.”
Analyzing the facts, he continued: “If it is aggravated crimes, the minimum sentence can reach 7 years.”
In his opinion, “crimes of 2012, 2013 and 2014 can be aggravated crimes (voluntary and conscious), so the penalty can go from 2 to 6 years.”
“The penalty could be more than 2 years, the limit to enter prison.”
Comparing it to Messi’s case, he stressed that the amount claimed for Cristiano Ronaldo “is superior to that of Messi,” but “is a fiscal crime more.”
