Mason locks down on defense to beat American 67-44

George Mason is on a roll after coming off an impressive road win at Georgia on Saturday. They followed up with a win last night over American 67-44 where their defense was locked in for the whole game. They held American to under 40% shooting and 3-for-16 on three-pointers. Mason once again had only single-digit turnovers and played a mostly disciplined game. DeVon Cooper led the way with 18 points (5-7 three-pointers) and D’Shawn Schwartz added 15. Josh Oduro was limited with some foul trouble in the second half but was still a factor inside.

Ronny Polite has finally emerged this season from injury and was a spark off the bench in this one adding six points in 20 minutes of action. He played more than Jamal Hartwell which could be something to watch as the season goes on.

Love the effort on defense, they didn’t get AU much to work with and forced them into a lot of bad shots. It reminded us how they played in the beginning of the season and they will need that intensity as we get into conference games.

Mason will now go to Wisconsin on Thursday since Coppin State is still dealing with COVID issues. A nice upgrade and road challenge before A-10 play begins.
