George Mason wins A-10 opener in double-OT thriller at UMass

Well that was something. George Mason came way with the conference win after a wild finish on the road against UMass Wednesday night. The teams went to two overtimes and we saw clutch shooting by Jamal Hartwell, Tyler Kolek, and Jordan Miller that kept Mason alive. Freshman Kolek was fouled on a three-pointer during the end of regulation and made all three free-throws to send them to the first overtime. Then we saw Hartwell hit a big time three-pointer to keep the Patriots alive and push to the second extra period:

In double OT, with Mason literally running out of players due to Foul Trouble, we saw Jordan Miller continue to step up. It came down to the final free-throws and he made the first while I think initially missing the second to run the clock out. He finished with a game high 26 points and had several key buckets.

There were a ton of fouls, bad shooting and plenty of turnovers in this one on both sides. Mason nearly lost this one at the free-throw line and by not taking care of the basketball. They went 22-for-36 from the line which continues to be an issue for them. However it was great to see them never give up in this one and continue to fight.

Tyler Kolek continues to impress and is looking more and more like he’ll be a stud in this league.

AJ Wilson had a pretty quiet night scoring but had four blocks on the defensive end. They really can’t afford for him to disappear in games this season, he needs to be more of a go-to guy for them and stay out of foul trouble. The same can be said for Josh Oduro.

It was good to see Hartwell hitting threes again after being held scoreless against Norfolk St. He got more minutes in this one as it appears that Javon Greene is in the doghouse or something. Greene was glued to bench for most of the game until Mason run out of guys in double OT. Not sure what’s going there but it’s not a good look.

It was a huge for them to get a win last night as they now have games against Dayton, VCU, and Richmond.
