George Mason came back being down as many as 15 points last night to beat New Mexico State and become Cayman Island Classic tournament champs. AJ Wilson was named tournament MVP and Jordan Miller was also named to the all-tournament team. It was a big second half for Mason and it their comeback was impressive. Jamal Hartwell and Jordan Miller combined for 23 points in the second half and Justin Kier added 13 points in 16 minutes of action. AJ Wilson had 12 points and 14 rebounds and it was impressive to see this group fight against the bigger Aggies team who dominated them inside in the first half.

The team’s commitment to rebounding and defense has really been the difference this season. They were getting beat in the first half and made adjustments that really turned it around right from the start of the second half. Also, Jamal Hartwell really stepped up running the offense, limiting second half unforced turnovers and hitting key shots. It doesn’t hurt to have Justin Kier playing more minutes as he felt his presence known in this was one and it certainly gave Mason a spark.

AJ Wilson’s progression this season continues to be a big factor for this squad. A lot of the young guys are stepping up and playing like veterans but Wilson has been a game changer up front. The team feeds off his energy and his offensive game certainly looks polished at this point after looking erratic in prior years.

We are now starting to see what this already successful team can do with the return of Kier and it’s pretty exciting. Kier has the ability to score from multiple spots on the floor and forces the defense to play more honest. He’ll help them continue to play well in transition and with ball movement. Look for him to also increase the rate at which they go to the free-throw line, which will be crucial in conference play.
