WINNING PITCHER: Stephen Strasburg (9-0), Joe Ross (4-4)
LOSING PITCHER: Max Scherzer (5-4), Gio Gonzalez (3-3)
SERIES MVP: Anthony Rendon. Renton was hot at the plate with 6 hits at the plate on 10 at bats. Renton homered, scored twice and had an RBI. Washington had multi-home run performances in the series with Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, and Danny Espinosa each smacking two homers apiece. Overall, Washington hit the long ball 9 times in the form game series.
UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT: That came in today’s 10-2 finale with a Pinch Hit Grand slam home run by Jayson Werth. It was Werth’s sixth career slam and put the Nats up 8-2, taking any hope of a rebound out of the Cards.
TOP STARTING ARM: Stephen Strasburg. Joe Ross pitched a fine game as well, allowing just 1 run over 7 innings to get back on track after a few outings. But how about Strasburg? Stras threw 6 innings, allowed 1 hit and 1 run on his way to a perfect 9-0 on the season.
TOP BULLPEN ARM: Kudos to Jonathan Papelbon and Felipe Rivero on two shutout appearances. Pap also picked up his 13th save this series.
HOT AS FIRE: Anthony Rendon. Renton was 6 for 10 this series with three consecutive three 2 hit games. Over his last ten games, Rendon is 14 for 35 (.400) with 6 runs scores, 7 RBI. After a small start to the season, Rendon has lifted his batting average to .267 and is hitting like the Rendon we expected.
STARTING PITCHING: Joe Ross and Stephen Strasburg were the stars, each allowing just one run each over a combined 13 innings. Strasburg was the stud, picking up his 9th win to stay a perfect 9-0. For Ross, he needed a quality start after allowing 15 combined runs over his previous four starts. Man Scherzer and Gio Gonzalez took losses. They got racked for 11 runs over a combined 11.2 innings. Scherzer has been on and off nearly all season, turning in Max Scherzer type dominating performances only to be followed by a less than impressive start.
COLD AS ICE: Ben Revere. The lead off hitter went cold this series, collecting just 2 hits on 16 at bats and scoring just one run. Besides the pinch Hit Grand Slam from Jayson Werth today, he was cold as well, collecting just 2 hits over 13 at bats.
What’s Next? The Nats embark on a lengthy nine game road trip beginning tomorrow in Philadelphia the to Cincinnati, and finishing up the road trip against the White Sox in Chicago.
