Roark fans 15 to lead the Nats to a 2-0 win over the Twins

Tanner Roark struck out 15 batters over 7 innings to lead the Washington Nationals to a 2-0 shutout of the Minnesota Twins.  In total, Roark permitted just 2 hits, 3 walks, and faced 26 batters on the day, as he dominated the Twins offense.  His 15 strike outs were a career high as he improved to 2-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.63.

Blake Treinen, Oliver Perez, and Jonathan Papelbon completed the shutout with 2 scoreless innings.  Papelbon fanned 1 and picked up his 7th save of the season.   All three relievers recorded a strikeout, giving the Nationals pitching staff 18 on the game.

Offensively, Washington got both of their runs in the first inning.  Anthony Rendon singled to center and was followed by a double by Bryce Harper to give the Nats runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the first inning.  Ryan Zimmerman followed Harper’s double with a two RBI single that gave the Nats the early 2-0 lead.  That is where the scoring for the game ended.

With the win today, the Nats improved to 13-4 on the season and have now won four out of their last five games.

What’s next:  The Nats will look for the series sweep against Minnesota tomorrow.  Stephen Strasburg takes the mound for the Nats and he will face Tyler Duffey.  Strasburg will look to stay undefeated, as he has posted a 3-0 start to his season.
