With World Class Wreckin’ Cru in 1984, he became one of the hip-most hop’s prominent figures. A few months after meeting his friend and fellow rapper Ice Cube, Dre decided to join the Eazy-E-led rap group N.W.A. Ruthless Records, founded by Eazy-E and Jerry Heller, published Straight Outta Compton in 1988.

One of the most influential albums in hip-hop history, Straight Outta Compton was certified double platinum and regarded as one of the most violent and obscene albums ever recorded. Due to a dispute with Jerry Heller and Eazy-E regarding royalty payments, Ice Cube departed NWA in 1989.

Eazy-feud E’s with Dr. Dre finally led to a rift between the two men. In 1991, he broke away from the gang to start Death Row Records with Suge Knight. His first solo album, titled “The Chronic,” was published in 1992. The album went on to sell 6 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular and well-produced hip-hop albums ever.

At number three on the Billboard 200, it became platinum in less than a year, making it one of the fastest-selling albums of all time. For the song “Let Me Ride,” the album won Dr. Dre a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and Warren G were all clients of Dre’s at Death Row Records while he was there (who is also his step-brother).

As a result of the ongoing legal battles and issues at Death Row, Dre decided to leave the organization in 1996. He renounced his rights to his back catalog and company ownership. When Dre departed Death Row, he said he fled with $50 million in his pocket.

As soon as he started his company, Aftermath, he started working with artists like Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent. Aftermath Entertainment was sold to Interscope Records for $52 million in 2001.

The sale of Beats by Dre to Apple

Dr. Dre complained to Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine in 2006 that he was unhappy with the quality of his music when played on Apple’s plastic Airbus headphones. When asked about it later, he said: “So many people are stealing my music these days.

It’s yet another thing that robs me of the sense of accomplishment I’ve achieved.” It was decided at the end of the meeting that Jimmy and Dre would start a headphone firm. First Beats by Dr. Dre Studio headphones were manufactured by Monster Cable in July 2008 and went on sale the following month.

HTC paid $309 million for 50.1% of Beats in August 2010, valuing the company at about $618 million. For $150 million in July 2012, HTC sold a quarter of its investment back to Jimmy and Dre, keeping a quarter of a stake. For $265 million in September 2013, HTC returned the remaining 25% interest to Jimmy and Dre.

A $500 million investment from private equity company Carlyle Group was also disclosed at the same time. For the first time, Beats was valued at $1 billion thanks to the financing. It was announced in January 2014 that Beats Music, the company’s subscription music service will go live.

After weeks of speculation, Apple confirmed on May 28, 2014, that it was purchasing Beats by Dre for $3 billion. Cash and shares would be used to acquire the company at a total cost of $2.6 billion. They both held a quarter of the company prior to the transaction.

It was estimated that each of their stakes was worth a combined $750 million prior to taxes, and a further $500 million after taxes. The Carlyle Group raked in $1 billion in profits.

Personal Life

Dre had a son with Cassandra Joy Greene, a 15-year-old lover when he was 16 years old in 1981. Rapper Hood Surgeon is the stage name of Curtis, their son, who goes by the stage name of Hood Surgeon. At the age of twenty, he finally met his father.

La Tanya Danielle Young was born to Dre in 1983, the second kid he had. When Dre and Jenita Porter had a baby boy in 1988, he named him Andre Young Jr. in honor of his father. Andre died tragically in August 2008 after an accidental drug overdose. Dre and singer Michelle welcomed a kid named Marcel in 1990.

When Nicole Young filed for divorce in 2020, she was married to Dre Young for the first time since 1996. Both Truice and Truly are the couple’s biological children. According to reports made at the time of her divorce filing in June 2020, she was entitled to a considerable chunk of his fortune because they had no prenuptial agreement in place.
