Early Life
Sara Gilbert was born in Santa Monica, California, on January 29, 1975. Her Jewish parents, Barbara and Harold, and her maternal grandpa, Harry Crane, were the creators of “The Honeymooners.” Sara is the youngest of four half-siblings, with two on her father’s side (Joseph and Patrice) and two on her mother’s side (Joseph and Patrice) (“Little House on the Prairie” stars Melissa and Jonathan Gilbert).
Sara began adopting the surname Gilbert in 1984, and she decided she wanted to be an actress when Melissa received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when she was six years old. Gilbert made her television debut in the 1984 film “Calamity Jane,” and in 1988 she earned the role that would make her a star: Darlene Conner on “Roseanne.” “Roseanne” ran 231 episodes over ten seasons between the original run and the reboot, and after the revival was canceled owing to star Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet, ABC created the spin-off “The Connors.”

Sara dated her “Roseanne” co-star Johnny Galecki when she was a teenager. Galecki was “very kind about it” and never told anyone about Gilbert’s sexuality, she has said. Sara didn’t come out publicly about her sexuality until 2010 when she started “The Talk.”
