Boar Hunt with SuperCore

This AM, Supercore and I ventured north of Arcadia, Florida to hunt boar. It took about 90 minutes to drive from SuperCore’s place in Bradenton. Our destination was RazzorRanch in Zolfo Springs, a year-round hunting preserve that specializes in trophy boar and exotics.

We got there just at first light. Supercore and I went in to sign paperwork and get the safety lecture. Afterward, we retired to the gun range to test out our guns. I was carrying my TC Compass in 7mm-08. SuperCore carried his Wetherby Vanguard in 30-06. We both nailed the steel target solidly to the relief of the guides. I took it that they see all kinds coming to the ranch.

Next, we loaded up the UTVs and took off in different directions with our guides. My guide, Ryan was taking me just to a hot blind. However, we had not gotten more than a hundred yards from the UTV before we sighted a decent sounder about 120 yards out, across a clearing. Ryan offered me a tripod, but I just nestled up to a nearby tree. It was still well before sunrise, but I was getting a good picture of things through my scope. There were all sorts of hogs milling about. Ryan pointed out a couple of big ones that might have gone upwards of $1,200,, but I was on a meat hunt. Eventually, a young boar of the proper size came from behind some Palmetto and wandered out to give me a good broadside shot. He dropped from sight. Ryan said I’d dropped him in his tracks.

We had just taken a couple of pictures when a text came that SuperCore had one down as well. He had driven out with his guide and spotted a large herd out in the middle of a field. 200 yards away were 4 hogs milling about. SuperCore had to wait a while for a hog to turn broadside finally. When one did, SuperCore knocked it over with a 180 grain softpoint. Both boar were between 100-120 lbs live weight.

Ryan went back to get the trailer and retrieve my hog. We then drove out to SuperCore and his pig. We then went back to the compound while the guide dressed the animals. I drove around a while with the owner; he showed me around the place. There were substantial herds of Fallow, Axis, and Sitka Deer along with some Red Stag. Within the hour, we were on our way back to Arcadia for breakfast at Wheeler’s Cafe– great biscuits and gravy. We were back in Bradenton, schlepping pork in the freezer before 11 AM. There was enough meat to fill a 62 quart cooler.

This was my first big trip out for me since the Chemo last year. I still have problems with neuropathy from the bug juice, but the hunt was all done on the flat, and I could handle the walking. I’m not up for any major hiking yet. This was just a grand way to get out between deer and turkey season. I’d recommend Razzor Ranch to anyone looking for that kind of hunt. What kind of hunt was it? It was far from what I normally think of as a wild hunt, but it was way beyond a petting zoo with benefits.
