The Denver Broncos have interviewed Luke Getsy for their open head coaching position. Here is everything you need to know about him.

A former quarterback, Luke Getsy enjoyed a successful playing career at Akron. Getsy only played there for two seasons but is fourth in career passing yards and third in career touchdowns for the Zips. Getsy lead the Zips to a MAC championship in 2005. After going undrafted in 2007, Getsy spent the offseason working with the 49ers. After that brief stint, he went on to work as a graduate assistant at Akron with Joe Moorhead. After just two years there as a GA, Getsy was named the Offensive Coordinator for West Virginia Wesleyan at just 25 years old.

Danny Creehan, the Head Coach of the Bobcats at the time, described how Getsy just “had it.” His natural inclination and ability led Creehan to hiring him despite being just a GA for a short amount of time. I wasn’t able to find any film on West Virginia Wesleyan sadly, but Getsy describes his offense by saying

““To be honest, I am going to want to pick up the pace,” Getsy said. “I am going to want to pick it up, move the offense up and down the field and get a ton of offensive plays in.”

He stayed there for a year before being called up to Pitt under OC Frank Cignetti, who was the quarterbacks coach for the 49ers when Getsy signed there. At Pitt, Getsy worked primarily as an assistant coach with quarterbacks. Getsy was on the staff there with now-Boston College Head Coach Jeff Hafley and current Washington Football Team Offensive Coordinator Scott Turner. At Pitt, he was described as Cignetti’s “right-hand man”, and as such, was hired by Frank Cignetti’s brother, Curt Cignetti (who is now the Head Coach at James Madison), to be the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He helped guide IUP to a 7-3 record, where the team averaged 27.7 points per game and 351.5 yards per game. The following season in his second year, IUP went 12-2 and went all the way to the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs. The offense’s numbers jumped up to 33.6 points per game and 417.5 yards per game.

After his success there, PJ Fleck hired Getsy to be his Wide Receivers coach on his initial staff at Western Michigan. There, Getsy coached freshman standout and eventual top-10 pick Corey Davis to a MAC Freshman of the Year season.

After that 2013 season, Getsy broke into the pros with the Green Bay Packers, being hired as an Offensive Quality Control coach. He quickly climbed the ranks at Green Bay, earning the spot at Wide Receivers coach just two years after he was hired in 2016. Under his coaching, Davante Adams began to transform into the wide receiver we all know and fear today. In his first year with Getsy, Adams set then-career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns and made his first Pro Bowl in 2017. Adams added that he has a “ton of respect” for Getsy and how he coaches.

Getsy was then hired by his old coach Joe Moorhead to be his Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers coach at Mississippi State in 2018. That season, the offense just from 100th to 20th in OFEI and from 39th to 27th in OF+. However, Joe Moorhead did call the plays for the offense at Mississippi State.

After that lone season with Moorhead, Getsy returned to Green Bay under Matt LaFleur as their Quarterbacks coach. He now serves as the Quarterbacks coach/Passing Game Coordinator for Green Bay. While Matt LaFleur handles play-calling, Getsy is mainly in charge of their third-down situational calls. For the last two years, the Packers have had one of the best third-down offenses in the NFL. Last year, the team finished 2nd in Offensive DVOA on third and 4th downs, with a first-place finish in conversion rate.

Getsy is clearly a hot name on the coaching market. His rise is only going to grow from this offseason, and it makes sense that the Broncos would try and get in front of it. There’s rumors out there that Getsy might be the Offensive Coordinator pick for whoever the next Head Coach is.

There are a few notable things that make Getsy stand out. First, he’s connected to a long-list of some pretty significant coaches. From the Cignettis to Joe Moorhead to Mike McCarthy, as well as Matt LaFleur, PJ Fleck, and even some other significant names like Charles Huff, Jeff Hafley, and Scott Turner, Getsy is connected to plenty of other styles and types of coaches across the NFL and college football. For a guy that young, that’s pretty impressive. That should connect him to a ton of different assistant coaches across the sport.

Second, everywhere he’s gone, the offense has made significant strides in improving. For a team that needs that in Denver, that cannot be emphasized enough. He’s also helped develop some elite talent over his coaching career. Guys like Corey Davis and Davante Adams flourished under Getsy. What could he do with a WR corps of Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, and Tim Patrick? I also find it significant that Aaron Rodgers had a bit of a career revival under him, and the last two seasons as Rodgers’s coach and Passing Game Coordinator have seen Rodgers put up MVP numbers. Even if they’re trying to sway Rodgers or not, that has to be a factor in these interviews.

Third, I’m pretty intrigued by his ability to diversify his offensive approach. At WVW, he said he was going to go high-tempo and throw the ball all over. With IUP, his team gashed opponents on the ground repeatedly. He’s well-versed in the RPO attacks of Joe Moorhead and Matt LaFleur, with the “Shanahan” wide-zone rushing attack, and he has experience working under the Cignettis and Mike McCarthy. I would be excited to see what his new offense would look like with full control in the NFL.

While it does seem a little premature to name Getsy a Head Coach, I get why the Broncos would do so. He’s young, established from a long and successful coaching tree, has plenty of player development in his resume, and he’s a hot name. This year might be their last chance to nab him. It would be a pretty exciting hire for Denver.
