Rumor: Broncos interested in Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield

According to Sporting News’s Eric Galko, the Denver Broncos are among the teams interested in the 2017 Heisman winner, Oklahoma Quarterback Baker Mayfield.

He states that NFL teams really like Mayfield and that they view him as a Russell Wilson/Drew Brees quarterback instead of Johnny Manziel.

Baker Mayfield will dominate the 2018 NFL Draft process just like Deshaun Watson did a season ago. But how high can the Heisman Trophy winner go? It’s possible (but not likely) that the Browns will want to draft him in the top five. But Mayfield has plenty of fans around the NFL. He’s a lot more like Russell Wilson and Drew Brees than Johnny Manziel, and NFL teams firmly believe that. Nearly every team in the top 14 will be interested, led by the Broncos or Redskins (whichever doesn’t sign Kirk Cousins), Bills (in a trade-up), Jets and Browns. It’d be a surprise if he drops below the top 14 picks.

Per Galko, whoever loses out on the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes will likely have first dibs on drafting Mayfield. Earlier in his piece, he states that the Broncos and Redskins are in a two-team race for Cousins and it appears that both teams “plan B’s” is Mayfield.

I had my doubts about the Broncos and Elway’s interest in Mayfield considering his height(closer to 6’0”) and likely small hand size, but it appears I was wrong(thankfully).

Mayfield does come from a spread offense and would need to translate to an NFL offense, but Mayfield can play. He would bring some much needed swagger and spunk to the Broncos offense that has been rather boring to watch the past few seasons.

Mayfield will likely be at the Senior Bowl here in a few weeks, a game that the Denver Broncos could be coaching, so they may get a first-hand look at Mayfield here very soon.
