Report: Paxton Lynch to be named starter Wednesday

Lynch likely starts the remainder of the season.

According to “local blogger” Benjamin Allbright, the Denver Broncos will name former first-round pick Paxton Lynch the starting quarterback on Wednesday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Dan Graziano quickly confirmed Allbright’s report.

This seemed like the obvious move after Lynch took some first-team reps last week and was promoted to the second-team quarterback as well. With the Broncos losing their sixth straight game, it only made sense to turn to their former first-round pick for the final weeks of the 2017 NFL season.

Lynch lost a quarterback competition this past summer, which now seems like ages ago, to now third-string quarterback/captain Trevor Siemian. He then suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him for a couple months before returning to practice recently. Now with the season all but finished for the Broncos, they will sit veteran Brock Osweiler and give their former first-round pick a look.

This will be an important final six weeks for Paxton Lynch. He will be basically auditioning for his future in Denver. If he shows the Broncos coaches and General Manager/President of Football Operations John Elway enough, the Broncos may move forward with him as their quarterback. If not, they may use their high first-round pick(currently picking 4th overall) on a top quarterback prospect or sign Kirk Cousins to a mega-free agent contract. So these “meaningless games” will be very important to Lynch.

The Broncos also recently fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy on Monday and promoting former quarterback coach Bill Musgrave to offensive coordinator. So we may see a very different offense from the Broncos on Sunday as they will travel to Oakland to take on the Raiders.

Lynch hasn’t fared well in his limited NFL experience thus far, but hopefully, he will show some progress this Sunday. What also helps his case is that he will be facing an Oakland Raiders defense that has not recorded an interception this season.

Things are about to get interesting Broncos Country!
