DEFENSE

New York Giants running back Orleans Darkwa did not necessarily come out of nowhere necessarily. No offense to the fantasy football experts, but it was not much of a secret that Darkwa was New York's best running back to anyone that has seen the Giants play football this season or last.

In Week 6—on Sunday Night Football—Darkwa ran for 117 yards. A running back running for 117 yards on the Broncos is a running back that has run for 63 more yards against Denver this season than Melvin Gordon, 92 more yards than LeSean McCoy, and 105 more yards than Ezekiel Elliot were able to do this season.

How Darkwa ran for all of those yards is the part that is important to focus on as you attempt to simmer your bowling blood.

Darkwa had 117 yards, but only four first downs... For reference Gordon had two first downs rushing against the Broncos, McCoy had two, Elliot even had one. So, what gives?

Chunk yardage, Darkwa's 47-yard run in the first quarter accounts for 40.2% of Darkwa's total rushing yards. Other than that 47-yard run, Denver's defense also allowed tiny Darkwa breakaways of 14, 15 and 19-yards.

The Broncos allowed Darkwa 95 yards on four rushing plays.

The rest of the time, Darkwa had 16 attempts for 22 yards (1.38 average yards-per-carry).

Ground Control

Someone has to be Major Tom and that very well may be Justin Simmons. Simmons led the Broncos in tackles. Which isn't completely peculiar, except that he played center field most of the game.

On top of leading the team in tackles (11), Simmons had one-third of Denver's team total in tackle for losses (two) and half of Denver's team total in passes defensed (two). His tackles saved touchdowns nearly every time.

On Darkwa's big run:

With Ahtyba Rubin subbing for Derek Wolfe, the Giants called for a play run opposite Rubin and Von Miller's side. Prior to the snap, the Broncos defense audibled, giving Miller a clear path to Eli Manning—daring the Giants to run at the well prepared defensive side of Domata Peko, Adam Gotsis and Shaquil Barrett with Darian Stewart idling near.

On the snap, New York's left guard John Jerry and left tackle Ereck Flowers allowed Denver's right defensive end Adam Gotsis to breeze through their gap as the action from pulling right guard, D.J. Fluker was about to crack Gotsis so hard that he fell to his knees. Recognizing the gap—and in a traditional 3-4 defense—strongside inside linebacker Todd Davis did what he is supposed to do—fill. Except he had Ereck Flowers cracking down on his blindside with a two-yard head start and by the time that Davis realized, it was too late. Brandon Marshall, who was likely responsible for filling the hole that Davis left in the defense was tied up on the weakside of the field by left guard John Jerry. See how that worked? Justin Simmons made the tackle on Darkwa 47-yards later, Marshall and Davis were near.

Darkwa went 47 yards and accounted for over 40% of his rushing yards on this single play.

It is time to recognize Justin Simmons as a leader on the defense and one of its many, many stars.

If you want to see that whole thing quickly, you can do that right here thanks to the New York Giants and Twitter.
