Vance Joseph blames penalties for lack of clarity on quarterback performances

Vance Joseph on the quarterbacks: “It’s hard to say who played well because of the penalties.”

Most pundits and armchair GM’s have already declared Trevor Siemian the victor over Paxton Lynch for the Denver Broncos starting quarterback job. Unfortunately, head coach Vance Joseph threw a bucket of ice on them all when he was asked about how happy he was with the performance from the quarterbacks.

“I was satisfied. Trevor was solid. He made some nice plays in the pass game. Paxton had some nice plays, but we had so many penalties. Overall it was a solid performance, but the penalties kind of killed us offensively. It’s hard to say who played well because of the penalties.”

“Trevor was solid.” Yeah, he didn’t do anything flashy and didn’t make any egregious mistakes outside of getting himself sacked one time.

“Paxton had some nice plays.” Hmm, he ran a few times and made a couple of completions, I guess.

“But we had so many penalties.” This qualifier for Paxton’s nice plays is that the team had too many penalties.

“It’s hard to say who played well because of the penalties.” What the what?!

It’s clear from this one answer that the Broncos are fully committed to staying the course and giving Lynch another shot at winning this job. It was reportedly his job to lose and so far he has done exactly that, but we’ll get to see him one more time on the field to try and turn some heads and change people’s minds.

Meanwhile, Trevor just keeps being Trevor. And he’s probably going to win the job anyway.
