MMQB's Albert Breer chimed in on the Broncos quarterback battle.

Albert Breer of The MMQB chimed in on the Broncos quarterback battle and stated that the presence of newly hired Offensive Coordinator Mike Mccoy gives second-year quarterback Paxton Lynch a "leg up" over 2016 starter Trevor Siemian.

Breer states McCoy's versatility as a play caller and offensive coordinator will help Lynch make that second year jump in 2017.

First, McCoy is master at retrofitting his scheme to match its signal-caller. In fact, it’s the mark of who he is as a coach. He made it work for Tim Tebow one year, Peyton Manning the next. So he should be able to mitigate that Lynch is raw, and that means talent will matter more.

He created an offense on the fly that made Tim Tebow into a successful NFL quarterback. He then changed his offense to fit Peyton Manning the next year and has changed his offense to fit Phillip Rivers strengths as well. Also, keep in mind, he made Kyle Orton look like a successful starting quarterback at times too. So he should be able to create an offense around Lynch's strengths as well.

Breer then states that McCoy will keep some elements of Gary Kubiak's offense in place to make it a smooth transition for Lynch and the rest of the offense. He did the same for Peyton Manning and Phillip Rivers in year's past.

According to Breer, newly hired Head Coach Vance Joseph watched every snap and every practice rep from each quarterback from last year and even reached out to former Head Coach Gary Kubiak to get a clearer picture of the quarterback situation.

After doing that, Breer says the current Broncos coaching staff came away impressed by two big things that Paxton Lynch did last season.

1. Coming off the bench cold and playing well against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and leading the Broncos to victory.

Trevor Siemian left game pretty early due to an injury, and the rookie Paxton Lynch had to take over. He came out firing and looked impressive. He finished the game 14-24 for 170 yards and threw for his first career touchdown pass.

Lynch flashed the potential that General Manager John Elway saw when he traded up for him in the first-round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

2. How to took drops from center

This was something that Lynch really needed to work on since he came from a mostly Shotgun offense in college and Kubiak's offense is run mostly under center. How he improved on that throughout his rookie season showed the new coaching staff that he is coachable.

Lynch did have to underwhelming starts against the eventual NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons and the Jacksonville Jaguars, and that showed he still had some trouble with defenses game planning against him and also that his mechanics and footwork are still a work in progress. However, those two things above showed the new coaching staff that there is still plenty to work here with the raw Lynch who is full of potential.

One person not mentioned by Breer that is probably more important to Lynch's development than McCoy is newly hired Quarterback's coach Bill Musgrave. He returned to Denver to help coach up the raw Lynch and hopefully to push him to that next level this season.

It was reported by 9NEWS Denver's Mike Klis days after the McCoy and Musgrave hiring that the Broncos want to do "everything they can to push him(Lynch) in year two".

Get ready, kid. According to league sources, the Broncos’ brass hope to determine during the organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp this offseason if Lynch is ready to become their starting quarterback in 2017. The team believes he has the talent and character. And the Broncos want to do everything they can to push him in year two.

Mile High Sports Benjamin Allbright was also told something similar after the hirings of Joseph, McCoy, and Musgrave.

As Klis said above, Lynch needs to prove himself first during OTA's that are going on right now and the eventual Minicamp practices. He needs to show the new coaching staff and General Manager John Elway that he is showing improvement and is ready to challenge and eventually surpass Trevor Siemian on the depth chart.

Lynch has spent the offseason working with quarterback's guru Charlie Taaffe to work on his mechanics and footwork, so he has been doing his part so far. The Broncos and Lynch are hoping that his hard work and the additions of McCoy and Musgrave are enough to push their 2016 first-round pick into a starting role in 2017.
