New York Giants headlines for Monday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Giants’ QB Daniel Jones clarifies comments: ‘I’d love to be here’

Sunday afternoon, as Giants’ players cleared out their lockers to scatter across the country for the offseason, Jones was more emphatic about wanting to remain with the Giants.

“I love this place. I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I want to be here,” Jones said. “There’s a business side of it all. I lot of that I can’t control. I really love and respect this organization, the ownership, the guys in this locker room.

“I’d love to be here. I’ve really enjoyed being here. We’ll see how it all works out.”

Jones said he “didn’t think there was much truth” to recent reports that he and the Giants were close to an extension that would keep him with the Giants. He would only say that he has had “positive” conversations with GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

Jones did admit “I’ve got a good sense” of what top quarterbacks around the league are making.

Other Giant observations

Giants’ Saquon Barkley not looking to reset RB market | ESPN.com

Running back Saquon Barkley is hoping for a new long-term deal from the New York Giants but isn’t insistent on topping Christian McCaffrey’s $16 million per year salary.

“I’m not really too concerned about resetting any [running back] markets or anything like that,” he said Sunday, when the Giants cleaned out their lockers following a 38-7 loss in the division round against the Philadelphia Eagles the previous night. “I’m realistic.”

Giants can be proud of turnaround season, but Eagles drubbing proves there’s still long way to go | The Athletic

The Giants have some building blocks in place. Left tackle Andrew Thomas and nose tackle Dexter Lawrence blossomed into second-team All-Pros in their third and fourth seasons, respectively. Both of those players are eligible for extensions this offseason, and Schoen would be wise to lock down those cornerstones in the trenches, especially after witnessing how dominant the Eagles are on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

There’s also McKinney, another third-year player who can be extended this offseason, and outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, who showed flashes of becoming a formidable pass rusher during his rookie season.

Leonard Williams speaks on potential pay cut from Giants contract | New York Post

Williams initially said that he “would probably consider” a pay cut from his $18 million salary, but he quickly walked back his words to say a pay cut is “probably something I would have to talk to my agent [about] and probably something I would have to see how [the Giants front office] is feeling.”

“I definitely love this team and I want to be here,” Williams said. “I want to play with Dex as long as possible. Playing with someone like that helps me individually, and we help each other and the defense when we have two stout guys up front.”

Notebook: Giants reflect on season, look to future | Giants.com

Safety Xavier McKinney on the Giants' future:

"I think we got a lot to look forward to," he said. "I thought we had a great year. I thought we improved a lot, especially just thinking back from where we came from the last two years, last three years. It's been a major improvement. I think we got a lot of things to be happy about. We shouldn't be complacent; I don't think we are. We still are going to be hungry for more, a lot hungrier. Now, we just got to look to continue to build off what we've already built. We just go to continue to try to improve so we can be back in this situation next year."

NY Giants: ‘Crash landing’ in playoffs brings promising season to end | The Record

But business is business, for the players and the team, so there is a lot still to be determined for their futures, and that of the Giants.

This was not eye-opening for Schoen – he’s had his eyes wide open from the start of this season and he’s proven that with his actions. If Schoen had delusions of grandeur, maybe he would have dealt a second-round pick at the trade to the Steelers for Chase Claypool, as the Bears did, buckling to the pressure of those who said the Giants had to make a move to show they believed in this team.

What we learned from NFL playoffs divisional round, Day 1 | CBSSports.com

The Giants need more help than we thought. This year was still a success for New York. The G-Men weren’t even supposed to make the playoffs, considering the torn-down roster Brian Daboll inherited. Daniel Jones certainly registers as a different prospect than he did even months ago. But unlike even Jacksonville, which took Kansas City to the wire under a first-year coach (more on that below), the Giants had hardly any fight or urgency in Philadelphia. That’s not primarily the fault of either Jones or Daboll, but rather a lineup still severely undermanned at premium spots. General manager Joe Schoen badly needs to prioritize upgrades along the offensive line, out wide and at linebacker, among other positions.

Giants’ Season Successful Despite Blowout Loss to Eagles in Divisional Round | The 33rd Team

The Giants never stood a chance in their 38-7 loss to the Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round on Saturday night. Despite the result, the Giants should be happy with the results of the 2022 season, says Trey Wingo.

25) New York Giants: Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina. Brian Daboll has done miracles in New York and deserves Coach of the Year, but one aspect of Daniel Jones’ game is still concerning. He has refused to push the ball downfield, and it’s not as if the opportunities haven’t been there. Whatever his reason, the Giants would be wise to rid him of his excuses next season and bring Josh Downs into the fold. The UNC WR can carve defenses up in space and generate downfield plays from the slot.

2023 NFL Draft Order: Giants hold 25th pick | Giants.com

After going 9-7-1 in the regular season, the Giants own the 25th pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Giants will not have long before the pre-draft process kicks off. The East-West Shrine Bowl will take place on Thursday, Feb. 2, in Las Vegas, with the Senior Bowl occurring in Mobile, Alabama just two days later. The NFL Scouting Combine will then be held Feb. 27 to March 6 in Indianapolis.

The 2023 NFL Draft will take place on April 27-29 in Kansas City, Mo.
