New York Giants: They’re convinced they can make a huge leap in 2021.

The Giants handed out huge contracts to Leonard Williams ($21 million per year), Kenny Golladay ($18 million per year) and Adoree’ Jackson ($13 million per year).

They boxed themselves in a bit with the Williams deal. It was either have him play on the franchise tag again, pay up or risk losing him in free agency. Golladay has the upside to be a really good No. 1 wide receiver, but he’s coming off a season in which a hip injury sidelined him to five games.

“Everything seemed like it changed for them with that Golladay deal,” Fitzgerald said. “The Golladay numbers make sense in a normal year, but by the time the Giants got involved, it was pretty clear the wide receiver market was soft, and I have no idea why they decided they needed to go that high, given where the market was.”

The process that led to the Jackson signing leaves the Giants open to being second-guessed. Jackson was scheduled to play the 2021 season with the Titans on the fifth-year option at $10 million. If the Giants really wanted him, couldn’t they have given up a late-round pick and traded for him on that salary? Instead, the Giants gave Jackson a three-year, $39 million deal even though he’s missed 18 games over the past two seasons.

There’s obvious upside with the players the Giants added. They are young and play premium positions. But New York showed no regard for value with the moves they made and went all-in on boom-or-bust signings.

Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the past few weeks knows the Giants are focusing on the short term. With starting QB and RB on rookie deals and a coach they (and, it seems, the team’s free agency signees) believe in, the Giants brass swung for the fences looking to end the streak of bad luck. Now it’s time to see if the gamble was worth it.

New York Giants: Joe Judge

The Giants had been struggling to find an adequate replacement for Tom Coughlin—who helped New York win a pair of Super Bowls—but seem to have finally found someone worth getting excited about in Joe Judge.

After flailing about for almost a half-decade with Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo and Pat Shurmur, the G-Men finally had a promising campaign with Judge in 2020. Though they won only six games, they showed flashes of what they could become with consistency, health and shrewd transactions.

New York has already made a few moves that fit that last description, most notably inking the top free-agent wide receiver in Kenny Golladay. Big Blue also acquired a high-upside cornerback in Adoree’ Jackson and rounded out the roster with several low-key signings like tight end Kyle Rudolph and running back Devontae Booker.

The Giants hold the No. 11 pick in the draft and should get another impact player there, plus star running back Saquon Barkley will be back after he missed all but two games in 2020 with a torn ACL.

Things are starting to come together for Judge and Co., so barring unexpected regression, the head coach isn’t likely to land on the hot seat anytime soon.
