Giants LB Alec Ogletree switches jersey number

Veteran linebacker will no longer wear No. 52

After six seasons sporting the Number 52, New York Giants veteran linebacker Alec Ogletree will switch digits for the 2019 season.

Ogletree will switch numbers with undrafted free agent signee linebacker Jake Carlock. Meanwhile, another undrafted free agent signee, tight end C.J. Conrad, is also wearing 47 in camp. That means Conrad will have to find new digits if he makes the team.

“It felt like I had done all I could do in the number 52,” Ogletree told Giants.com’s Dan Salomone.

But why number 47?

“In biblical terms, the number seven means ‘I’m a completion,’” he told Salomone. “Number four — I read it means your mind, your body and your spirit are in line with the structural world again, and for me, in organized sports. It (also) means stability at home. The number 47 reminded me of where I come from, what I’ve been through, and where I’m headed. Those are a few of the reasons why I changed it.”

Ogletree also told Giants.com why he originally chose 52.

“It’s a fresh start for me,” he told Salomone. “I wore 52 because one of my favorite players wore it and I didn’t really have a meaning behind it. This gives me a little bit of meaning, which is the reason why I changed it.”

How did he land on the No. 47? Some spiritual soul searching.

The Giants open preseason play Thursday night at Met Life Stadium against their crosstown rivals, the New York Jets.

Over 80 career games played, the former first-round pick out of Georgia has registered 595 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and 11 interceptions, along with four touchdowns. Ogletree scored twice last year for the Giants.
