New York Giants news, 2/7: Malcolm Butler, Odell Beckham, more

Lets take a look at Wednesday’s headlines

Good morning, New York Giants fans! Here are some Giants-related headlines to start off your Wednesday.

Malcolm Butler emerges as possible target for Jets, Giants after he denies wrongdoing in Patriots farewell post | NY Daily News

As for the Giants, they have big money tied into defensive players Damon Harrison, Olivier Vernon, Janoris Jenkins and Jason Pierre-Paul, and will likely have to give Landon Collins a big contract in the near future.

That could limit what they may want to spend on a corner like Butler. They also have more of a pressing need to fill at linebacker.

However, there is some uncertainty surrounding Eli Apple and his future with the Giants, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will be 32 in the final year of his contract next season.

If the Giants decide to part ways with either one, suddenly Butler becomes an interesting name worth checking on.

Justin Pugh, Geno Smith headline list of 25 Giants free agents | ESPN

Unrestricted free agents

QB Geno Smith: He served as the backup to Eli Manning this past season, but there will likely not be room for him on the roster this fall with Manning, Davis Webb and possibly the No. 2 overall pick on the roster. Smith is better off on a team where he has a chance to play.

OL Justin Pugh: He’s probably the best and most expensive player on this list. The guard/tackle will have suitors this offseason, especially in an especially weak free agent offensive line class. The Giants will have to pay up to bring him back.

Mock Draft Tracker: Experts update Giants’ pick | Giants.com

With the conclusion of Super Bowl LII, the 2017 NFL season is officially in the books. Now it is full speed ahead to 2018.

The first-round draft order is set, the deadline for underclassmen to declare has passed, and teams took a good look at some of the top prospects at the Senior Bowl. Of course, draft experts could not wait to release their first mockups over the past few weeks and, in some cases, months.

ESPN’s Todd McShay was in the latter category, projecting UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen to the Giants at No. 2 back on Dec. 13. Nearly two months and the hiring of a new general manager and head coach later, McShay has not changed his mind.

New Giants general manager Dave Gettleman will have to make some defining moves in his first months on the job. Gettleman already has decided to stick with starting quarterback Eli Manning for at least one more season. A major decision about the second pick is now less than three months away. And perhaps the toughest call of all looms: What to do with star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.?

Beckham made his intentions clear on Saturday when he said ”it’s that time” to sign a contract extension with the Giants. It will be fascinating to see how Gettleman handles negotiations with the mercurial receiver, especially after co-owner John Mara has repeatedly stated his desire to keep Beckham.

Great news for Giants fans -- Odell Beckham Jr. was back to his springy self at the NY Giants’ “Dirty Dancing” commercial shoot ... just a few months after his horrific ankle injury.

How do we know? TMZ Sports spoke with Giants lineman D.J. Fluker -- one of the background dancers in Odell and Eli Manning’s hilarious Super Bowl 52 ad -- and he confirmed OBJ’s running and jumping wasn’t just camera tricks.
