Giants news, 12/14: Damon Harrison’s reluctant leadership, more news

Let’s check today’s headlines

With defensive captain Jonathan Casillas on injured reserve, interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo selected Damon Harrison to fill that role for the remainder of the season. Harrison wore the “C” on his jersey for the first time last week against the Dallas Cowboys.

It was an interesting choice. Harrison is highly-respected by Giants players and coaches. He has in the past, though, said he doesn’t consider himself to be a leader.

Spagnuolo was asked about Harrison’s reluctance.

“It’s funny you say that. I just said, God gifted you with some leadership tools. I mean, we talked about that. He was more than willing to step up and be that guy,” spagnuolo said. “He doesn’t like to be in the forefront of things. You know how there are all different kinds of leaders. There’s guys that lead by example. There’s quiet leaders. There’s vocal leaders. He’s a leader.”

What is left to play for?

At 2-11, the Giants are obviously playing out the string of a wasted season. What is left to motivate players at this point?

“Just the love of the game, really. Like I said, I’ve said this before, but it’s a blessing to be in the league, so I’m never going to take it for granted. Every time I’m out there on the field, I’m going to give it my best, I’m going to give it my all because this game can be taken away from you just like that,” said running back Orleans Darkwa. “But just the love of the game. Going out there and at the end of the day, everybody wants to win. We don’t like that feeling of losing, nobody’s gotten numb to it. We just have to make sure we can go out there and get a win and what a better way to get a win against the Philadelphia Eagles, you know?”

Landon Collins also weighed in on that topic.

“We are playing for this organization for one, the tradition here and for yourself. At the end of the day, you’re playing for this game, you love this game, you come out there and play each and every down,” Collins said. “This game is not for long so if it’s not for long, then why not give it every best chance you get because any given day it could be taken away from you. It can be taken away from you any day.”
