Chase Claypool visits with Seahawks after spending last season between Miami and Chicago

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Could Chase Claypool bounce back out west after seasons in Chicago and Miami?

Odell Beckham Jr. and Tyler Boyd are some of the top remaining free-agent wide receivers but a former Miami Dolphins pass catcher is drawing attention just weeks before the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Seattle Seahawks met with Chase Claypool on Tuesday, just one week after the Saskatchewan Roughriders added him to their exclusive negotiation list. He began the 2023 season with the Chicago Bears but was traded to the Dolphins in early October.

Claypool, 25, caught eight of 21 targets that came his way last season, closing the year with 77 receiving yards and a touchdown. Mostly a boundary receiver, only 47 of his 194 snaps came from the slot.

Seattle hopes to identify depth behind Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf on the outside while 2023 first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba looks to build on a promising rookie campaign.

Claypool has struggled to find his rhythm after a monster nine-touchdown season and is considered a low-risk and high-reward addition. That fits what the Seahawks need, considering just $2 million in Salary Cap space and six players combing for a dead money salary cap hit of $36 million in 2024.

Meanwhile, Miami sits just $3 million under the salary cap and hopes to add a third banana behind the dynamic duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The Dolphins have been in contact with Beckham and have reportedly offered him a contract, but it doesn’t seem like a move will come before the draft.
