NFL Power Rankings Week 15: Dolphins rankings hold steady with Tannehill injury

The Dolphins came away with a victory but had Ryan Tannehill get injured. Their Week 15 power rankings do not know what to do with that.

The Miami Dolphins picked up their eighth victory of the season and seventh win in their last eight contests, finishing this past Sunday’s contest with a 26-23 score line over the Arizona Cardinals. The Dolphins did not finish the game, however, with quarterback Ryan Tannehill under center after a hit to the knee sent him to the sideline, then the locker room.

A day later, Tannehill and the team received good news as MRI tests came back showing the ACL was not torn and the quarterback would not need surgery. His ability to play again this year is still in question, but it at least means he will be able to take part in the offseason programs with the team and be ready for training camp.

The weekly power rankings from around the web did not seem to know what to do with the Dolphins this week, with a large number of them keeping Miami with the same rank as a week ago. Should they be higher with the win? Should they be lower with the Tannehill injury?

Each week, we take a look at some of the various NFL Power Rankings from around the web, seeing where the Dolphins are ranked and what other sites are saying about the team. Here is the Week 15 version of the Power Rankings review:

Comments: Sunday’s blowout loss to the Ravens after six straight wins shows that the Dolphins may not be for real after all. It’s understandable that they’d struggle offensively, but the defense was gashed by a team that has failed to move the ball all season. Fortunately, there’s still time for them to get back in the playoff race.

Comments: See how much Ryan Tannehill's teammates were emotionally affected by his injury? They clearly think he's the man even if outsiders question it.

Comments: Now it seems like Ryan Tannehill might be back at some point this season. I’m interested if Matt Moore can do enough to keep the Dolphins afloat until Tannehill can come back. Moore has had his moments, it has just been a long time since he has had a chance. They’ll be an interesting team down the stretch.

Comments: They must play without Ryan Tannehill the rest of the regular season after his knee injury. It's all Matt Moore now.

Comments: Huge win/ huge loss for the Dolphins on Sunday. At 8-5 after the rain-soaked victory, Miami is right in the mix for the sixth spot. But if the Fins are to make the postseason for the first time since 2008, Adam Gase's group will have to do it with a whole lotta Matt Moore. Ryan Tannehill is out for at least the next couple weeks -- if not the season -- with a sprained ACL/MCL. As backup quarterbacks go, Moore is top notch. Can he produce against the Jets? Everybody else does.

ESPN

Comments: Ryan Tannehill's season could be over, but don't write off the Dolphins just yet. Matt Moore is 13-12 in his career as a starter (.520 winning percentage), which is a better record than Tannehill (.481). Moore's last start and win were against the Dolphins' Week 15 opponent: the Jets.

Bleacher Report

Week 15: 17

Last Week: 16

Comments: When Ryan Tannehill was carted off in the third quarter, I knew he had hurt his knee.

When coach Adam Gase confirmed those fears, I knew Miami’s playoff hopes were dashed in a big way.

For now? These 'Phins are worthy of a positive ranking. Tannehill’s loss looms large, but Gase involved Kenny Stills and Jarvis Landry even after No. 17 left. He’ll continue to do so with Matt Moore in command.

He’ll also need to lean more on this Dolphins defense. Carson Palmer was under far more duress than its three-sack effort suggests.

Looking forward: Miami's offense got it done in the rain. Up next: A potential snow game in New Jersey.

Comments: Thanks to the Broncos faltering Sunday (and a tough end-of-season schedule which we’ll cover in a moment), a wild card spot is not out of the picture for the Fish. But three big divisional games round out the regular season.

Washington Post

Week 15: 12

Last Week: 14

Comments: The injury to QB Ryan Tannehill’s left knee is not as serious as initially was feared by the Dolphins, as tests showed a sprained (but not completely torn) anterior cruciate ligament, along with an medial collateral ligament sprain. That leaves open the possibility that Tannehill will play again this season, especially if the Dolphins reach the playoffs. But if they’re going to get to the postseason, they’ll need backup QB Matt Moore, who takes over as the starter for now, to contribute.

Week 15: 16

Last Week: 13

Comments: Following a miserable 32-point loss at Baltimore, the Dolphins rebounded in a big way by outlasting the disappointing Arizona Cardinals. But the team’s victory was tempered by the news of quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s knee injury, which is why they slip three spots. After the game, head coach Adam Gase stated that “it doesn’t look good.” That’s very unfortunate for a team that has now won seven of its last eight games since opening 1-4 this season. In the win over the Cards, Tannehill threw for 195 yards and three scores (1 interception) before backup Matt Moore came in and finished the job. Miami’s suspect defense gave up 154 yards rushing but sacked Carson Palmer three times and force him into three more turnovers.

Next Week: The Dolphins head north for a Saturday night tilt with the New York Jets, a team they knocked off eight weeks ago in South Florida by a 28-25 count. The win gives Miami a chance to sweep this series for the first time since 2009. The ‘Fins are 6-2 in their last eight road tilts vs. the Green and White.

Playoff hopes: Miami is still in very good shape and still have a chance to win the AFC East, especially if the Patriots fall short at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. Of course, a lot also depends on how Moore plays in place of Tannehill. But the veteran quarterback certainly has his share of starting experience.
