VOTE: Terminally ill Doddie Weir nominated for prestigious award

Former Scotland international Doddie Weir has been nominated for the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Month, following his emotional appearance at Murrayfield Stadium in November. Weir is terminally ill with MND, but since diagnosis, has been making huge efforts to raise money and awareness.

The former Lions second row delivered the match ball ahead of Scotland's November match with New Zealand, flanked by his three sons, Angus, Hamish and Ben.

Since announcing he is suffering from Motor Neuron Disease last year, Weir has set up a foundation, much like the late Joost van der Westhuizen, in the hopes of finding a cure and helping others.

"Doddie Weir is a legend of our sport and is famous for his fun, positive and light-hearted approach to life," said Laureus Academy Chairman and All Black legend Sean Fitzpatrick.

"The fact that he has taken a similar approach to his diagnosis for MND, and is raising funds and awareness for research into the disease, is inspirational.

"The reception he received from a packed Murrayfield ahead of the All Blacks match was both emotional and incredible in equal measure, a fitting tribute to a great man."

Every month, users can Vote for their best sporting moment, as selected by sporting legends from the Laureus World Sports Academy. The monthly winners then go head-to-head with a final public vote, and the winner will be announced at the Laureus Awards Ceremony.

"I’ve walked out onto that pitch at Murrayfield so many times but to do so with my three sons was special, the reception we received was something my family and I will never forget," said Weir.

"I am a firm believer in the power sport can have to instil hope and inspire so it is an honour for me to be in contention for the Laureus Sporting Moment Award.

"The reaction I have had from the rugby and wider sporting world has been incredible, and I’m grateful for the support we continue to receive through the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation."
